2005+ Brake controller question

Been test driving some trucks and when I hit the brake control lever it reads 0.0, others 9.0 and some are in between, the dash always say "trailer disconnected".

My question is there something wrong with the controller if it reads anything other than 0 with no trailer? I'm just wondering so if I decide to buy if I need to have it fixed.

I've never paid attention to mine but that should be the gain on the trailer brakes that was previously set. And if your not hooked to a trailer it will tell you its disconnected, its nice if the plug gets loose it will tell you before you hit the brakes and find out.

Good to know I wasn't sure if the truck stored the setting or not. My '07 did the same but there was a problem in the controller and it ended up being replaced by the dealer when I bought the truck so I wasn't sure.
