5r110 Transmission Problem

Up until today, transmission has been working fine. Today, I put it in park to fill up with fuel, and leave the truck running. When I get in to leave, I try to put it in reverse and there's nothing. Gear selector goes up and down free. So I check underneath, and sure enough, the selector on the side of the transmission is popped out. I tried to pop it back in, but it doesn't want to stay in. Now I have nothing but reverse, and when it is in park, if you put throttle to it you can tell it is in gear, but with the park engaged.

Do I need to run selector back and forth and find the right spot to pop it back in, or is something wrong internally?

Thanks!

The arm with the ball rotates on the shaft that goes into the trans?

Its what moves on the side of the transmission whenever you move the column shifter up and down. I can get it to pop back in, but just comes right back out when I move the shift lever.

A branch got wedged in there a couple of weeks ago, but worked fine until now. It must have been partially popped out and now it came farther out.

you need to drop the pan, there is a roll pin that holds the arm in place. It either snapped or fell out.

Can I do this and simply fill back up with fluid? Don't want to get in over my head...

Nothing a zip tie can't fix, seems the little flanges that hold it onto the selector on the side of the transmission have broken.

Just put the gear selector on the column to park, then move the gear selector on the side of the transmission to where the cable is and that will be park. zip tie that puppy and go to your parts specialist to get a new one. I am not to sure if you can just buy the poppet or if you have to get the whole cable assembly.

I bought an entire new cable assembly from Ford I think for around $70 or so. Mine broke somehow... never really figured out how or why it did.

So the plastic part of the cable snaps on to the ball, but keeps popping off? Hard to tell what's going on in the picture but I'd be willing to bet the plastic piece just broke on the outside or cracked so that it slides on and off easily.

If you want, I can check in the garage, I MIGHT have the old cable, the plastic portion on mine was still good...

its not the cable guys, its the shaft that is coming out of the linkage inside the trans.

Thanks for the input guys.

I got the pan off, and could see the problem. I slipped the shaft back in to where its supposed to be, and moved the roller over the top so the column shifter moves fine now. But I have to figure out if I slipped it back in at the right spot so it won't be in the wrong gear for the column shifter position. Can I start it up, and quick try it out to see of its in the right position with the pan off, or will that hurt my trans? And what holds it in place so it won't slip back out again? Attached is an image I just took, maybe you can see if anything is amiss....

Any thoughts? What keeps the shaft in place so it doesn't slip back put? Is the roller on top the only thing that holds it in?

in the picture just to the left of the pan bolt hole there is a machined there is supposed to be a roll pin in there

OK I'll get a other roll pin. There wasn't a roll pin in the pan or fluid, is that a bad sign LOL

And how do I know the proper place to put the shifter so its at the right spot? Which way should the selector be in park?
