I can't stand squeaks and rattles and my column shifter is my latest source of frustration. Has anybody taken that apart? Is there a wear item in there I can replace to tighten it up?

Yes, there are two plastic (I believe) bushings in the column that wear out. I need to do ours as well. There is a very good video on youtube about how to replace them.

its pretty straight forward. remove the plastic cover around the shift lever, and the piece below it. drop the column by removing the 4 13mm nuts from the studs under the column. once you have the column lowered a bit, you will see the shifter tube, and the bushings that are more than likely worn smooth out. i believe there are two "straps" that hold the tube down to the column, iirc, t30 torx bolts.
