High oil temp while towing

So the other weekend I pulled my toyhauler which is 42 feet long with my sandcar in the back. Total weight of the trailer i think was around 16k. I'm running matt's 8k tow tune, the truck is studded and the egr is blocked on both sides. I asked matt if i was ok to tow heavier if i keep an eye on egt's, he said i should be fine. Egt's didn't get over 1200 degrees, but my oil temp was 249 and coolant was 237 while pulling a 6% grade about 2 miles long. How do i keep my oil cooler? or am i just worried about nothing. air temp outside was 53 degrees. I just don't want to be over heating my oil when summer hits.

Ouch. 250 sounds kind of high on oil temp. When I had my 6.0 I never seen it get much over 205. I know this is the 6.0 thread but towing that much and more with my 6.4 my oil never gets over 220 and high high alarm is set at 230. That is 6.4 stuff though but I thought 6.0 and 6.4 had close to the same oil cooling systems. I'm not 100% sure but to me 250 sounds kinda oil. The only way I know how to cool it down is run another oil cooler like bulletproof diesel sells.

Switch to a full synthetic oil if you didn't already. Synthetics will hold up better to temps you quoted with little worry about oil failing.

Get the snow plow fan clutch for it. That will help out a lot. It kicks on way before temps get high.

What rpms are you holding on the hill?

I have a 06 with a few mods. My trailer is 16-19k and I pull it all over colorado. On the long pulls over the Rockies in the summer I have to watch the water, oil and egts close. I hold 230 water 240 oil and 1350 (my limits) which I have throttle left.

Might want to check to make sure your radiator is clean. The fine. My chevy had a over heat problem and it had got lots off grass in it.

I'm running rotella t6, will the plow fan clutch help with the oil temp?
I didn't look at rpm but if i had to guess, maybe 2500-2800.
I'm planning a trip to denver, and i've pulled the eisenhower pass. but this was with a much lighter trailer and i didn't have any problems. but with this pig, i'm really concerned.

Up to 250 is operating range. Defuels at 253.

I think you could also have a tune written to have your fan come on sooner like maybe 200 or so which would help pull some heat out of the oil. I've had my oil up at 278 before I did a oil cooler and other mods and that is when my truck would de-fuel.

Yes it will help with oil temp.

When I did injectors 155's my oil would run 230-235 on the flat ground. Put the snow plow fan on it and now I run 205-210.

8854 is our group 4 synthetic 5w40 and 8800 is our bad ass group 3 15w40. Very stout oils. 8854 has saved my ass during some no oil pressure incidents. Our 20w50 has lowered Harley Davidson temps by 15 degrees over a competitive synthetic. Same add pack different Viscosities. Its hard to fund engines that get that hot when they are all controlled to operate around 200 or so.

I hit 248 degrees on a bone stock 6.7.. too high? Lol towing 16.5k on a 6% grade.

Pm me some prices on oil. I have my ford and chevy I wouldn't miss testing it out and seeing what it does.

My ford is tuned up the chevy is stock. The chevy will run 220-240 on flats and 280-300 on long hills.

It is a high performance engine oil. It has proprietary additives in it balance with add pack carriers already. Some of them are similar to popular oil additives on the market. The difference is the carrier in the oil is balanced to carry said additive more effectively.

That's getting chit done right there! I have a 14' Street Glide and a heavily built 80 inch Evolution motor that gets VERY high oil temps. I might think about giving your stuff a try.
