They are the same exact thing. A vnt is Garrets named-turbos that are vgt. Now, there's different methods of controlling tha vanes, but all vnt's are vgt's.

Like i said, same outcome but different approach, but they are NOT the exact same thing.

VNT has(Garrett GT3782VA from 6.0 PSD) 9 vanes that pivot on a unison ring to change the angle of the exhaust hitting the turbine wheel and also altering the a/r.

VGT has (Holset HE351VE from 6.7 cummins) a large slide that restricts the exhaust by moving linearly in/out.

But all are vgt's. That's like saying a vgt isn't really a turbo because its variable and not a set a/r. Well, they ARE both turbos, just different kinds that operate differently. Vnt's are just one manufacturors brand of a vgt, but still a vgt none the less. The geometry inside a vnt still changes.
