Most anyone on here is gonna want a compression test before they think about buying this

agreed, I think I have under 50 bucks invested in my Compression tester and it works like a charm. Only pain was having to wait for the special fitting I had to order off line , everything else was bought at a local harbor freight . Would be a good investment for you to go this rout

Especially for the price he is asking... it may be worth it if compression is good across the board.

Op, you can find junkyard 7.3s for $300 to $700 and even with a rebuild kit you might have $1500-1700 into it and be back to factory specs.. not knockin ya but just trying to give ya some insight on what would help move it for you.

Yes i'm considering a kit, especially since this wont be the first engine im selling. Would you guys usually want a cold and warm number to see if the rings are still good?

If its within spec while cold then hot numbers dont matter... I wanna say fords hot specs are 320lbs or 330lbs per cyl.. so if they are all above 300 cold it should be ok I think..

If numbers were good I would be considering it but definitely not for that price. I would go down to the local junkyard and get one with bad numbers and rebuild it and still be under what your asking.

300 is pretty damn low on compression. Usually we consider an engine in poor condition if it has below 350 psi in any cylinder.

Pretty sure factory spec is 400 - 410 psi. Anything 350 or higher and within 10% is what is desired. Of course elevation is a factor also.

Cold or hot?

live life full throttle

Most of what I read was saying on a cold engine and really wouldn't be a difference between hot and cold. I know on my first truck it had 226 k on the clock and 4 or so of the cylinders were 410 or so there others in the 350-360 range and one was 260 or so. Somewhere along there and it started to smoke more and more and had pretty bad blow by. All cold readings. I just wish I knew then what I know now and I never would have bought it. The previous owner used and abused badly.

Holy hell... that means I put 50k-60k miles on my dually when we did a sorta warm compression test and the numbers where right around 300lbs across the board. If thats considered low. Then I had one of a kind... cuz it didnt have one issue starting or running. Blowby wasnt an issue either... just bending pushrods.

Could your timing be way off? Just curious. Off enough that you could have valves opening when they shouldn't be to bend pushrods and not get good compression numbers?

if your timing was off enough for compression to be affected you would have bent a valve by now...especially with the low deck clearance of diesels

No. Stock valve springs and pushrods are not happy when your pushing close to 40psi of boost at or above 3800rpm... hence the reason I bent 8 pushrods and broke a rocker...
