The $60 dollar version is What a lot of forklifts have as a only means of a parking brake they are left on indefenetly and worked well IMHO

but like mentioned it doesn't substitute an independant mechanical means of braking that is required for us,

I have a question in looking at the real issue here which is that the 99-2004 at least parking brakes suck @$$ big time. Even properly adjusted I would be scared to death to have to rely on one of these if I have a manual trans on any kind of steep grade. With a full payload forget it. SO the question is can we add or swap a parking brake system onto these trucks?

Specifically I was thinking about the 96-97 Super duty drive line brake that mounts between driveline trans/transfer Its a drum brake system. Then there is a disc brake driveline E-brake system that is popular with the Rock crawlers that goes between the transfer case and driveline. These are the brakes you see on motor homes as well. I think something like this is really the correct answer and to not have some serious liability issues. It would very likely pass an inspection as well. Its totally manual and could be wiring right into the stock P-brake actuator pedal.

HRT,

You come to mind of someone that might know if this is doable or not so extensive to be a reasonable modification /swap. Any other ideas in this area to address the problem?

I need to look at the ones used by the crawler and what transfer cases they work with and the differences compared to ours.

Its something that has always been an annoyance but not enough obviously to draw my full attention to it. But I have to say I am getting tired of slowly easing off the brake when parked on a grade to try and let it come to a rest gently on the trans parking notches. If its something that can be done and not cost 100s of hours or $$$ I would move it up the list that's for sure.

If you scroll down the page, lower down they have part #02-640-126. This is what I am running on my rollback and it has sat for a week on a slope and never had an issue.

And they are no where near the cost of the electric ones. I didnt have any inspection problems with this set-up either, although I would check your local laws before purchasing one as everywhere seems to have different rules.

I have watched many a roll back driver that had to shut off his truck, chock the wheels then get back in a restart the truck to winch. Totally sorry but a true statement. Medium duty IH trucks. They sure needed something better.

Here's a couple:

(this design may be an option for a diff-mounted brake)

Here's a nifty mechanical caliper for this application:

First one to market with a kit specific to our trucks WINS!!! To me, a properly functioning e-brake PREVENTS anyone (like my ex-wife ) from driving with it on...

Ditto!!!! 4 miles I think with it on full. But its my fault for not fixing the glichy brake light sensor. Many times it would not light when teh brake is on. Now if it did not come on at all when the brake is pushed that would be a most accurate description of the brakes performance. Nonexistent!!!!

I am with you a E brake that actually holds so strong as to cause the suspension to flex up or actually could slow you down at a rate noticeable if you applied it would be great. I woudl take one that could hold the truck and a trailer on a incline rock solid. LOL

Hmm The Mount of the rear driveshaft in 4x4 to the transfer case is fixed not slip yoke correct? In 2w drive with no transfer case its a slip yoke at the transmission mount?

Anyone know what the bolt pattern is at the transfer case?

I have seen the same thing. I just replaced the one on my rollback due to the same issue. When they are new they seem to work great. I am sure there is some wear that happens to them over time. I still chock my tires when I am winching though cuz I have managed to drag the truck even with the tires not spinning before trying to get a truck out of the ditch.

I agree that they are not the ideal solution for the problem that we have, but I would trust this option WAY more than the crappy factory parking brake on our trucks.
