His d135 doesn't have a cover. He could drain the oil and check it. But to inspect the gears he would have to remove the whole 3rd member.

Yeah, there ain't no cover to pull. and I know I'm not a big enough boy to heft that 3rd member out by myself. As far as oil changes, I did that about 60K ago. Scared the parts guy when I ask for 14 qts of 75-140 gear oil. but that's what it takes.
Everything seems tight, no excessive back lash or rough bearings

Duh, I didn't see it was a 550. I'd still lie down along side and watch for what binds. It isn't that bad, just stay out of the way.

Mount a cam under the truck.

Either that or find a kid or small person (Gare comes to mind), with a sense of adventure. Duct tape and zip tie them to the frame. They can find what is loose.

Make sure they are wearing safety glasses, and gloves. Safety first.
