you can spend a couple hundred dollars which might save you 10 dollars a week or you can buy beater for that same price and save a hundred dollars a week. your pecker is the same size regardless of what you drive.

haha thats funny but i know i had one but sold it working on getting another was just trying see what people say becuase im prettty sure everybody does gotta drive your baby sometimes

Nah, mines bigger in the LS because my thighs rub together and the friction gets my hammer all worked up...its embarrassing at gas stations...

I didn't catch your location so with winter coming it might not be a good option, but even better than buying a beater car, get a small, but decent motorcycle like a Honda VLX600 (There are a TON of bikes that fit this desription). They can be had around here for $1,000-$3,000 all the time, they get almost 70mpg if you ride it nice. When my wife got her new motorcycle I started riding her old one (The VLX) to work and it saves me right around $400 a month or a little more over driving the truck. I drive about 80mi a day round trip, so that might be dang near a grand you could save just in a month.

BTW, I used to be one of the guys that refused to give up driving my truck, I mean seriously....I bought it because I like it so why buy a beater, I WANT to drive my truck. I never really worried about mileage, but lets face it. I get go take the motorcycle out twice a day and basically "make" and extra $400 a month. I'm convinced.

Only problem with that is a motorcycle will not carry the tools I work with out of my truck everyday. If I get a beater that will carry my tools, it won't beat my mileage by a whole lot.

Tools, guns, kids, and ive never really got an easy feeling about hitting a deer on a motorcycle at 4 in the morning.

I bought a 12v 3.0L taurus for a work.car once.and about two months in and rock solid 15mpgs. I solf it. Vutless, gas guzzling pos.

Most of.those.cars dont.get mileage like people think or.claim. I had another taurus when I.worked for the state for a little while and it had a 24v 3L in it. Same piss poor mileage.

My mitusbish eclipse gets 30ish if you can keep off the boost but its blowed up.so.....no dice.

Guns, tools and kids can be hard to move on a motorcycle for sure. Just figured it was a good suggestion for commuting if it's not to a jobsite, etc. The days I need to get my son from school or whatever, I just ride home and grab the truck since his school is WAY closer to the house than work.

You can get everything but the tools with a beater eco box, but it is hard to make up the money spent in purchase price, upkeep, insurance, etc. I had a '97 Escort at one point that would get 38-39mpg on the highway fwiw.

Ive had one! NO! It was wound out at 55. Screaming! It was a topaz but same car.

Had a mercury mystique 4cyl too. Paid 2500 with 100k on it. Drove it for two years, put another 100k on it. Sold it. Still around. 96 dodge neon. Paid 1500, headgasket for 125bucks, and drove it for a year. Sold it to a guy getting divorced for 2900 with 64k miles on it. That was the best commuter I had. Well, besides my lincoln LS'. But totally different mileage.

Not the same... I could burn the tires through 3rd gear and chirp 4 and thats without the parking break set..

Whether I agree with you or not isnt the issue. Several people ask questions in this vein. Somebody always has to say that. Its bs advice. Im sure he realizes inadequacy or he wouldnt have started the thread. No hard feelings, nothing personal but Id like to remove that auto response from all these effin threads!

In something.with.stock-33" tires and 3.73 gears if the driver stays under 2k rpms 20is attainable if you accelerate gently. Yes, even in a 7+ k pound truck.

Running wheels 12" in width(which I do :D ) isnt the way to do it. Narrow wheels and tires win this battle.

Fancy air filters and tuning is NOT the answer. Use the least amount of fuel possible and you'll get the best mileage.

The effects might be greater in a different vehicle.

I just picked up a 99 CC 4wd SB w/ 217k miles.
I pulled my bronco back from DFW to NE and if I kept rpms @ 1800 I got a real 13 mpg. It has a 4" lift and out of balance 33x12' At's and sloppy steering. I'll probably lower a bit and go to 33x10's and regear to 3.55's or 3.31 for hwy driving and 18ish will be realistic.

FWIW, my 02 w/ 35's w/ 6spd I got 18mpg until I had a set of rings go out :lame:

No way I would drop past 3.55s unless I was 110% sure it wouod be all highway use!!!! A 7.3 will not get better mpg by dropping to that low of a gear ratio... dropping weight is the best... and yes good custom tunes will net better economy along with better drivability.

When I first put the 37's on my truck I was getting a solid 17mpg. As it's gotten older it has slowly dropped. I hope to get some back with new injectors and Hpop soon. I'm not too sure that the gears wouldn't help as I gain a consistent mpg to 1.5mpg when I switched from 35's to 37's. I guess it would depend on how you were driving the truck. The thing about tires or gears people forget about is getting the calibration on the speedo/odo correct. If you are using the odometer and not adjusting for tire size with larger tires it will show less than actual miles traveled.

Small mods to air cleaner and has a ts performance chip. I guess if I drilled the back bumper and took all the lead out it may help but then it wouldn't ride so rough. Lol

I love how mine runs with 35s, but thinking of goin back down to 33s but thinking that if I did to probably go with 3.55s. But don't even know wether it would be worth it or not. Not really lookin to improve mileage though, just wanting to ditch the lift, but mileage gain would be ok with me.

Good to know. I can find 3.55's gears and full axle sets so I may go that route. The only real way to drop weight in these truck is lose the SD frame and 1000lb motor

@ 70 via GPS I'm at 2000-2100 and my mileage changes from 13 to 11 towing my bronco. AT 75 I'd guess 2250. If your mileage is acceptable w/ 35's then stick w/ it. IMHO 33's and 3.55's would make decent DD and Hwy truck if you spend less than 50% of your time towing. My empty to tow ratio is about 99 of 100. In 8 years my 02 had a trailer/tow bar hooked 4 times. My 6.4 in 3 years was about 6 times.

33's are less expensive to replace, you'll have less rolling resistance and they are easier to change on the road when you get into your older years. I'll drop my truck about an inch or so and try to eventually go 3.55's w/ the 33-AT's.

FWIW, I do believe 3.55's AND 3.31's were offered at one time in the OBS models according to a quick parts search, as were 4.10's in a SRW.
