This is a great question that I've wondered as well. Would a guy be better off buying a replacement long block that is already built up, opposed to tearing down my engine and putting it all on there. I cant remember where, but I thought I saw replacement long blocks (built with rods, pistons, studs, ported & polished) for sale. If I remember right, it was reasonable to the point of being cheaper than buying the parts and doing it myself... Don't quote me on that though. The wonderful part about that is you would have much less down time I would think, just pull old and put in new.

I want the exact same thing as OP. A daily driver that can get vicious if need be. It takes a ton of power to be competitive against a well tuned and dual pumped 6.4, but I don't want a 6.4, I want a 6.7 that can hang with or beat a 6.4.

I have a friend with a tuned 6.4, he dynod at 586rwhp. He absolutlely beats the dogcrap out of it. He has made lots and lots of boosted launches drag racing it, and has pulled it probably 10 times. The only problem he has had is he blew a tranny at a sled pull right after he souped it up, pulling in 4hi, 1st gear. The ford mechanic said if he would have pulled in 4low, 3rd gear it would probably hold. He has followed that advice and has not had any trouble since (something about 3rd gear being a "direct drive" and 1st being tied with reverse).

If this new 6 speed is as good or better than the 5 speed, it might last for a while...

I don't have a problem with putting some serious cash into my truck, but I don't want to have to have it in the shop all the time either.

I agree with JD completely. Your looking at over 30k for a truck that can handle high horsepower. What most people don't understand is that a built motor will not last forever. They're designed to take a lot of abuse, but only for so long. There is no such thing as a worry free built motor. Parts still break, transmissions still need refreshing every year at high power levels, and suspension will eventually develop issues. This goes for every manufacture and every motor. Not to mention once you dump that money into a truck, it's gone forever. Resale is not increased, it's decreased substantially in the eyes of the paying market.

Labor is going to drive that price pretty high. For a full motor build, cam, rods, manifolds, etc I would guess you're in the neighborhood of 10k without blinking an eye. Trans you're in close to 5k.

Add dual pumps and supply - $3500

Add turbo(s) - minimum of 5k

Sweet! Recipe for 700hp or so if you already had tuning/deletes... Going to compounds will double your turbo budget, and adding nitrous will likely speed up broken drivetrain pieces. Now you should look into traction bars and suspension pieces to keep everything underneath happy.

With no labor, I would say 25-30 grand could get you a solid platform for pretty well whatever you want.

Our customers only have about $25-27k invested with labor.

See that's not to bad. My deal is this. I want a hot rod, or nice car but if I can spend the same to build a powerhouse I drive every day and use for work I can enjoy it much much more.

Also keep in mind and do some research if you doubt me. Most guys have a goal of xxxx.hp then it isnt as daily drivable as stock or tuned stock. Then in the process they can spend countless hours and dollars trying to get it right for them. Each person is unique and is willing to live with different trade offs. Lastly the real b#tch is when you spend 20k then have to start a square one when something wants out of the block. That 50,000 dollar truck just took a huge dump in resale plus the voided warranty

At first I was like you. Then after pricing stuff and watching others it became obvoius that a stock truck or mildly modded truck made alot more sense. A quick good looking truck is as good as it gets. Your never going to be the fastest or most powerful unless you have deep pockets. Then trying to drive it everyday....

I wouldn't do it. My definition of "hot rod" is old school american muscle. But even calling the new cars hot rods.......they are putting out 500-660 HP from factory. WITH factory warranty. I bet it takes a CCSB putting out 750+ to run with a new bada_s sprots car. With the 30k it took me to get my truck there.....I'd have my car more than 1/2 way paid off. And I would have 2 sweet rides

I actually really understand wanting to do this. Back when I did it I got really really lucky. My good friends built me a incredible turbo setup and made 700+ HP for a couple years with only studs...Parted it out before anything big broke and made about 50% back. Bad part is the higher you go the tougher it gets, I would also hope you don't depend on this truck to make a living or at least have a back up....
