This is a great question that I've wondered as well. Would a guy be better off buying a replacement long block that is already built up, opposed to tearing down my engine and putting it all on there. I cant remember where, but I thought I saw replacement long blocks (built with rods, pistons, studs, ported & polished) for sale. If I remember right, it was reasonable to the point of being cheaper than buying the parts and doing it myself... Don't quote me on that though. The wonderful part about that is you would have much less down time I would think, just pull old and put in new.
I want the exact same thing as OP. A daily driver that can get vicious if need be. It takes a ton of power to be competitive against a well tuned and dual pumped 6.4, but I don't want a 6.4, I want a 6.7 that can hang with or beat a 6.4.
I have a friend with a tuned 6.4, he dynod at 586rwhp. He absolutlely beats the dogcrap out of it. He has made lots and lots of boosted launches drag racing it, and has pulled it probably 10 times. The only problem he has had is he blew a tranny at a sled pull right after he souped it up, pulling in 4hi, 1st gear. The ford mechanic said if he would have pulled in 4low, 3rd gear it would probably hold. He has followed that advice and has not had any trouble since (something about 3rd gear being a "direct drive" and 1st being tied with reverse).
If this new 6 speed is as good or better than the 5 speed, it might last for a while...
I don't have a problem with putting some serious cash into my truck, but I don't want to have to have it in the shop all the time either.
