Recently I was at the local parts store buying oil for my jetta tdi and found this Pentosin 5w40 on sale. I was wondering if I could use this in my 6.7 powerstroke. Its a full synthetic rated for 10k mile oil change intervals and made for diesel engines but its not CJ4 rated. So I was wondering if anybody had any insight in using this oil in a powerstroke or if it could be done. It'll cost me half to do a oil change compared to mobile 1 that I usaully get from Wal-Mart. Thanks in advance for any info.

Be careful of any oil that states a drain interval on the bottle. Drain intervals are limited first by the level of contamination ingressed, then the oils durability not the other way around. And, I'd definitely watch oil spec. CJ4 oils are all pretty good. High calcium packs in other spec oils might be problematic.

It actually doesn't say 10k oci but that's whats recommended from vw with specs that this oil meets

I've tested about a dozen oils in common rail TDIs with emissions intact. The fuel dilution is far too high for a 10k oci.

Well good thing my tdi is not a common rail and second I have a tdi with 345,000 on it and I have always done 10k oci.

Zmann, I do agree that oem recommendations are best and wouldn't want to chance wearing out the engine prematurely trying to skimp on oil changes. The thing is if I can get the same performance from a top quality oil that cost half the price, why not?

, why not?

because "warranty" is my main concern

secondly who is going to stand behind the statement that you can us the oil with no issues ? normally you have an API specifications to back it up

so either the oil in question does not meet the spec or they didn't want to get the licensing

not faulting you for considering it
just giving my 2 cents

Do you think having all the emissions equipment on and intact play a big role in that?

If you want a good oil, get it from Jim. If you wanna run longer OCI, get his oil and a bypass setup, and run oil analysis.

Definitely, regen is pissing all kinds of fuel into the oil. Only engine that's worse is the maxxforce

Figures. Lol
Glad that stuff will be taking a hike. Hopefully sooner than later.

I did notice the oil was immediately dark. I've seen some extremely high EGT'S during a regen. But it's "within spec" per vw. Lol

Everything I can find on this Pentosin stuff is either meeting specs for European diesels or an API rating of SM/CF and I'm not 100% sure, but I believe those are gasoline engine ratings, I would steer clear in the 6.7, not saying it would cause detrimental failure the second you put it in the engine, but saving $60 on oil isn't worth it to me.
