Turbo going dead???

What are the first signs of a turbo going dead on a late 99 SD?

curious about this as well, mine runs fine on flat land but surges really bad on any kind of incline pull.

Check for shaft play.

Shaft play is a given... they tend to make odd noises as well.. lol these turbos are pretty stout though for what they are.

I'm pretty sure i have a boot with a hole in it. I'm gonna pull them off and clean them up and look at them this weekend. I have my faithful 96 Stroke so i'm not in a bind.

very common with the stock turbo...a wicked wheel can stop most of that surge...
