I not only believe it, I have seen what can happen. When I was an apprentice mechanic, a truck came in with the fan right into the rad. He did exactly what you are talking about, carboard right against the rad. The bearings on the fan clutch got weak, and finally let go, allowing the fan to go forward into the rad. There is alot of suction from that fan, if you block it, it is still trying to suck air through the rad, when then means the fan is going to try to go towards the blockage, like a vacumn cleaner

How many times did you see that failure? How many tens of thousands of people do it? See what I'm getting at.

I've personally been doing that 15 years at least. On different vehicles. But you don't go for a perfect seal if that's what you are implying. You only want to block the majority of the airflow. Or go ahead and cut a 3" hole in it. It will help get you heat from the coolant.

I personally have only seen the one, but the journeyman in that shop had told me he had seen it alot. Not to mention, if you only have it on there for a relatively short period, you may not notice the damage that is actually happening. For the trucks that work in the oilfield here we will tarp them in (run a tarp from the hood all the way to the cross member)

I am not sure where you are from, but I am from very northern Canada. I have a feeling that our temps are most likely considerably lower here than there. And to be honest, I havent felt the need to even put anything on the grill of anything for many years (last vehicle was a 85 ford f150. Although, I did have a 07 duramax that the tranny literally froze (well mine and 17000 other owners) but that is another story
