03 turbo modification or new turbo?

Currently have an 03 excursion but just sold 05 excursion with 04 motor and reman turbo on it. I could tell a big difference in turbo lag and responsiveness between the 2. Not sure if the reman was an 04 version or later. So, is there anything that I could do to help this 03 turbo perform better down low? I was looking at better uppipes and newer factory downpipe with hollowed cat into 4" cat back in hopes of speeding up spool time. What about wicked wheel or batmowheel, think it would be worth it? Only use truck to haul people and rarely small light trailer in town.

i would say tuning would be my first step. If a stock 03 turbo spools too slow for you, i dont think you will be happy with anything

It is possible your 2005 excursion had a 2005-2007 turbo on it. They are a tad smaller and will spool slightly faster.

But I would not say the stock 2003 turbo is "laggy". I would be making sure there is nothing wrong like a boost/exhaust leak. Or maybe a bad sensor.

Bummer. I don't think I have a leak from what I could see. Stock I can only hit about 20lbs unloaded and 25lbs with srl tune. Also previous owner did egr ****** used puck in uppipe but read that may be OK due to early design. I think I may try and replace uppipes with bd power and maybe add a wicked wheel. I've noticed it was leggy from day 1 but was comparing it to an 04 excursion I drove and now the 05 confirmed there was a difference. Where does your stage 2 fall in regards to lag compared to the 03, 04 and 05-07 turbos?

I mean this in the best possible way. But you don't know if you have a boost/exhaust leak unless you actually test it. People always doubt that they have a leak, even though just about every truck I have tested ended up having some sort of leak. Don't just throw parts at it. Take 20 min and do a boost leak and exhaust leak test, it might save you a lot of time and headache.

I spend A LOT OF TIME working through problems with people, they describe high egts, turbo lag, and low boost. It seriously make me laugh when someone says "wouldn't I notice a leak"... well I think you are noticing a leak, that is exactly what you are describing.

The stage 2 turbos spool very well. Many report faster than stock with the right tuning. But I try not to sell people turbos when they are complaining of major turbo lag on their stock setup, because these stock turbos should not be super laggy. It is usually a sign of an underlying problem that does not get fixed when they swap the turbo.

Sounds good. Before I just checked boots and intercooler at common spots and no soot on exhaust that I could see. I will try and rig something up to test them out. Thanks for the advice, I just wasn't sure if it would have been possible to have a bad turbo only.

It is possible to have a bad turbo, but it is also possible to have leaks. It is best to do some diagnosis.

Well, good news and bad news for me. No boost leak at all. But leaking exhaust from up pipe and somewhere on downpipe. I was planning on getting the bd power up pipes and diamond eye turbo back that reuses cat, mine is hollowed. I can also locate a stock dp and just get a cat back exhaust for now. So, would the 3.5" over the 3" be worth it, cause some lag or move power band up or should I just get the 3" with this stock turbo and upgrade when I get a larger turbo? Thanks for the advice and send me back out for diag to find main issue!

not enough of a difference to matter on a tune only truck.

The BD power up pipes are pretty sweet. I run them, easy to install and clear my RR.

Yes, they went in very easy along with Diamond eye 3.5 dp. Fixed the exhaust leak and no boost leak but still lags some down low. Just compared ebp, map, baro and not getting reading on baro. Not sure if it's the torque app or sensor now.
