Just figured Id share the somewhat mild build Im doing for my friend Jeff (05sixliter) that ended up turning into a lot more than originally planned. Jeff has been helping out as his time has allowed, and he is heading back home to Viriginia now and will come back for a weekend when Im ready to put everything back in the truck.

Several months ago the truck dropped #7 injector so it sat for a while til he could get a set of injectors. Couple weeks ago we pulled the injectors to have them sent off to be built so they would be ready to install when I pulled the cab the next week to do studs. When I went to pull the heads off though we found an unexpected surprise. The injector must have hung wide open and melted the glow plug and the piston on #7

So we pulled the engine out and I tore the block down and took it to the machine shop yesterday. The block was in a little worse shape than I expected for only having 105k miles on it. The rod bearings all were not wearing well and there were grooves in the crank from some grit that was on the bearings. IPR screen had plenty of metal shavings in it as well. Im hoping that the machine shop will be able to polish the grooves out since they arent too deep. Most likely the cylinders will have to go .010 over. The heads are all finished, just had some cracks in the exhaust seats so thats taken care of. 80% of the valve guides were wore out and there were 8 bent or poorly worn intake valves and 4 bent exhaust valves.

Ill keep the build updated, as of now its just a waiting game with the machine shop. Here is the build list.

Heads:
All new valve guides
All new valve seals
8 new intake valves
4 new exhaust valves
.004 taken off the deck
All hardened exhaust valve seats

Injectors
190/100s from Warren

Fuel System
Regulated return from Greg (Pizza Pig)
Jeff is also trying to work up funds for a fuel lab pump and filter bases as well

Retaining the stock turbo for now until he has the funds down the road

Block
Polished crankshaft
Block decked
Main honed
Cylinders bored .010 over
Rod and main bearings
Pistons, wrist pins
New lifters
New water pump
New oil cooler
Cam bearings
Egr delete which I had installed a while ago
ARP studs w/ ford gaskets

Heading to the shop

Needs a coolant filter kit ;)

Lookin good so far buddy!

.

I've got a sinister coolant filter I've been running since I picked the truck up about two years ago. Eventually I'd like to ditch the sinister and go with one of your absolute coolant filter kits. The aluminum base you use will match with some no limit intercooler piping down the road.

Why was this thing in such bad shape? Seemed like the bottom end was pretty rough for low miles.

I've owned the truck for 2 years and put 25k on it. I have a good feeling the previous owner ran it low on oil at some point. I've ran all amsoil fluids since day 1 and kept up on all Maintnence. Truck was never beat on but I have had fun while driving it :ford: never been to the track or sled pull. Pulled a few trailers nothin over 10k tho. I was in shock when we got it all tore down to see how bad she was. It is what it is tho, hopefully we won't have any major issues after this.

Like Jeff said I think it was just poor maintence from the previous owner. The ipr screen had metal shavings in it. Oil cooler screen was clogged and had a small tear. I had grit sitting on the surface of some of the rod bearings so **** got in there sometime. Luckily the grooves in the crank from that grit will be able to be polished out since the crank is on the high end of spec. Still waiting to hear more on the rest of the bottom end

Just a small update. Pistons, bearings and seals are on their way. Block should be done soon.

The truck is also planning to get a 66/73/14 RCD non vgt turbo set up and Ill possibly be building a fuel system to compliment the regulated return with cat filter bases, fuel lab or a1000 pump and bdp sump.
