Finally got an 06 put back together and it runs great! Got the FICM repaired and it started right up. Initially the truck has been sitting for a few months because of a botched oil cooler repair. Got it together and now this. Boost gauge does not got past the first line after zero on the dash gauge. Its moves but barely. Even floored. Get it back to the shop and I noticed oil smoking off of the turbo. From what I can tell it's coming from the bottom. I did check the feed and it was dry all around. Is the drain prone to leaks and is ther supposed to be an oring on the drain? I don't remember there being one when I put it together but I could be wrong. I just remember setting the turbo on the drain and pressing on. Did I mess this up? Is there anywhere else it can leak from?

Next thing, the coolant tank was filled up till the brim and the truck was started and ran. After the test run, the tank was still full and steam was coming from where the thermostat housing mates to the water pump. No water just steam. I think the thermostat may be stuck closed. There was no coolant in the upper radiator hose and no heat as well. Am I correct to think it's the thermostat or is there another issue that can cause this? Temperature gauge did move though.

Both of these things were found after the test drive which was about 5 miles round trip. It felt good to fix something that has been sitting for so long and these issues are kind of a bummer. Hopefully there an easy fix. Thanks!!

Yes there should be 2 O-rings on the drain tube, one on the turbocharger end and the other on the oil cooler end. How high did your ECT get? The thermostat starts to open at 189 degrees F and should be fully open at 219 degrees. After the truck's ECT gets passed 189 degrees and there is no heat and a Flat upper hose you would be right to suspect a bad thermostat

Definitely don't remember any orings on the turbo when it got put back on. Looks like that's coming back out! This is why I hate fixing someone else's mess. I checked advance to see how much a new thermostat would cost and the picture shows where the steam was coming out pretty well. It's almost like a piece was cut out of the housing and pressed back in.

Oil leak is fixed! O ring crapped! Coolant issue is straight as well. We are having a crap time trying to clear the cooling system of all the oil that got in there. O rings are swelling up left and right. Don't think the water pump is digging the oil...

I replaced a failed oil cooler on a buddy's truck a while back. You need a scan tool that will let you monitor ECT. What we did was pretty effective. Remove the hose from the radiator to the degas bottle, attach a water hose with a valve to the small port on the radiator. you can either run a hose from the degas bottle to a large container, or remove the radiator cap. I pulled the thermostat for this too. Unplug the fan connector, and partially block off the air flow through the radiator.

Now monitor the temp, run the truck to get it up between 200-220F (95-105C) and turn the water flow to the radiator on kinda gentle to medium. The grey goop will start flowing from the degas bottle. You can also add degreaser through the radiator, like simple green, purple power, etc. to remove the oil. The key is temperature though, without heat, you can flush with a hose for days and that stuff won't budge.
