15 tailgate and step addition?

Well took a sling to the tailgate on my 15' and it has a step, trying to find a replacement for under $1600 + paint is impossible! What would it be like to get a tailgate that didn't have a step and modify it using my original gate? Doable by a back yard mechanic?

New shell from ford are very reasonable. How bad did it damage your step hardware?

Just the shell is buggered! $850 for a shell from Ford and the 600 for paint! Buddy is paying for it since I was helping get him unstuck but I don't want the guy to say beat it and lose my number!

Seems extremely high on just the shell unless its a platinum gate.

15 shell with step is $400 about everywhere that I can see.

i have a brand new 2014 gate in white, no step in Toronto, Canada if you decide you want to do away with the step...

Ya there are tons with out the step but I like and use mine just not the handle. Thanks though!!!
