Hello All,
I have a question about my truck, It is a 2000 Ford F250 with the 7.3l Power Stroke. My issue is this, If I do not let the truck warm up it falls flat on its face and stalls and then becomes very hard too restart. Once it restarts it runs rough and smokes for a couple of minutes. Once the truck has come up too normal temp it is fine. I had this problem a couple of years ago and took it too the Ford dealer and had them replace the CPS which at the time took care of the problem. It has started again so I purchased a CPS from the local parts store and that did not fix the problem. After doing some reading I found that with the local parts stores it was a crap shoot as too whether or not the CPS would be good. So I purchased one from the Ford dealer. I just put the new sensor in and that did not fix the problem. It did get rid of the rough idle issue I was having. I read somewhere that it could be the warm up valve on the engine that could possibly cause the issue. Unfortunately I have been unable too find this valve and try wiring it in the open position. I am also unsure if that would actually cause the issue. I would not normally care but I am a Volunteer Firefighter and when a call comes in I need too be able too get in the truck and go. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You
Chris Robinson

its probably the ebv valve. The valve is bolted to the back of the turbo and is supposed to help warm the engine up in cold weather. there is an acuator underneath that you can unhook and see if that helps.

How many miles are on the truck and has this been an ongoing problem getting progressively worse or just an all of the sudden deal? How long have you owned it? Is/Was well maintained by you or previous owner? To me it sounds like an injector issue. The ebpv should not make a hard start at all as it should not be actuated until below 32 degrees and even then only at idle after a five minute idle or so and when at a set cruising speed going down the road, then it will act like it has no power until the boost comes on and the valve opens back up. All of this is only when below freezing outside. Id say time to look into a set of sticks for it... But before that you could try glow plugs and a gpr to see if that can get you by on the cheap for the time being. Use only motorcraft glow plugs or stancor's DO NOT get bosch...

You may also ask a mod to move this to the 7.3 technical section too it will get more attention there

Glad to see you made it, welcome to the Army!

You will need more than a Diablo programmer to get the data you really need to help.

silverpsd, The problem had gotten progressively worse for probably the first month or two, and that was about 6 months ago. There is a little bit less than 66000 miles on the truck I have owned it for 4.5 years at this point. All of the service was done by a local Ford Dealer and I have done all the service since then myself. Only gets an oil change a year seeing as how I only put on a little bit over 6000 miles a year on it. Unfortunately because I have a company vehicle the truck sits most of the week.

To me it sounds like you have injector issue's. If i had to take a guess the thing doesn't start really acting up until it gets cold outside, if its a 80 degree day it doesn't do it nearly as bad if i had to guess or am i wrong?

Old injector o-rings could have to warm up before they seal, causing the problem.
Check the EBPV too to make sure it's not sticking. It's located on the bottom back left side of your turbo.

This particular problem doesnt really seem too change in severity with outside temp. It acts the same at 80 degrees as it does at 30 degrees. Only difference is that at the colder temperature it runs a little rougher at start up than at 80.
