So I have a full billet 5r in my truck now. REALLY thinking about going to a 4r especially since it looks like I'll be getting a daily driver in the near future. Looking for info from people who have ACTUALLY done this swap so I can find out exactly what I will need and try to price this out and get some more info before I jump into it.

yeah not much different than a 6.4

gasser 4r100 and a pcs, not sure if on the 6.0s you need to swap the input on the transfercase to fit the 4r or not tho...

Driveshafts are the same, I used a 7.3 t-case but I believe you can swap input shafts. Gasser 4r bc they pretty much bolt up to the 6.0&6.4 except the top two bolts also from what I have been told the gasser 4r is a thicker resulting in a stronger case.

Nice talking to you earlier. Posted on here hoping to gather what I can about the fine details and see if I can make this happen

Yea Josh, not gonna be a whole lot of info on it as only a couple people have done it. Just gonna take a little R&R and patience lol. But it's well worth it in the end.

It's no different really than what Craig and I put together in his 6.4. And just to be clear so lurking readers do not get confused, it most be a 4r100 modular case. IIRC Dustin is right that the transfer case input must still be swapped out in the later model superdutys.

to the op: unless you are looking to make some quad digit power, I wouldn't suggest swapping to a 4r. Honestly with the 5r units available now, I doubt I could even see a reason to swap unless you were looking to build a drag truck and wanted full control of your trans without having to learn the 5r PCS.

What's wrong with the 5R. Been pushing a lot of hp through it for a while now

No doubt there, but so has the 4r and from what i hear for longer periods of time. I personally swapped to a 4r because well, I could. I went a different route and am extremely happy with it. Its good to have a different option to go with rather than just the 5r.

Ok fair enough, has craig made any impressive passes since strapping on the 4R, forr that fact has Rudy made any good passes, both there trucks fell on therre face at the races last weekend. Just saying

You got me there, I'm not sure I haven't kept up with their builds or results after their swaps. I knew Craig was rollin' a 4r but was not aware Rudy was too, none the less I still believe working with the 4r is going to take a lot more fine tuning. It's not a slap in trans like the 5r, when a 4r first got put behind a dodge CR I'm sure there was sometime when the 48re was running faster, it just took a little time to get it dialed in just right. That's all a 4r swap is going to take in a 6.0/6.4. Just my opinion.

When I've seen Craig's truck run the trans shifts damn good.

Honestly, id swap a 4r into a truck at 500hp. If you tow a lot and like the downshifting, a 5r is nice. altho with some careful tuning a 4r could be made to do similar.

After driving a truck that went from 5r to 4r, its hands down better. spools faster, burns the tires better, will shift and lock WHEREVER you want it to, and less smoke out the tail pipe. I know it goes against conventional wisdom that the 6.0 would run better by losing a gear, but theres more than meets the eye. A lot of it has to do with the converter used as well. From what weve seen, a 4r is more reliable over 500-600 hp than a 5r is, on a large scale. Some trucks will hold big power with a 5r for years, others eat them like candy. And this is even with propper tuning.

Also, isn't craigs fastest pass on the 4r? I might be mistaken but seems like I remember that for some reason. maybe one of the mpd guys will chime in and set it straight.

Once you ride in a truck with a BTS 4r, you wont want anything else.

On edit, I almost forgot to answer the OPs question. Youll use a modular (gas) 4r case. Then youll need to swap tcases or tcase input shafts to a 7.3 style. And a PCS. Youll also need to fab a little bracket to hold the shifter to the side of the case but that's easy. Driveshafts stay the same. Then if its possible id have someone live tune the engine and the pcs, but if youre halfway knowledgeable the PCS is very user friendly and an afternoon riding around with a buddy making changes and youll have it tuned exactly how you want it.
