I'm thinking about rebuilding my 4r100 myself, buying a rebuild kit, converter, and deep pan and doing it myself, its been f-ed up for over a year and a half now and I finally have a little money and I have decide I would like to try it myself, never been inside an automatic trans and not really a good understanding of how it really works, anybody who has tried it or is very successful at it please either try to talk me out of it or tell me with the right tools i will be fine, i have a book/manual that i am going to read cover to cover as well, and what rebuild kit and converter would y'all recommend? any little bit of advice, warnings anything is helpful

Might be doing this in the future also. I'm sure a good guy to contact on here is Mark Kovalsky. He is the 4R100 whiz. He is also a former Ford transmission engineer I believe.

Here's you special tools:

Two slide hammers with threaded adapters to pull the pump.

A few pieces of flat stock with some all thread to use to compress the intermediate return spring to remove the retainer.

A chunk of exhaust pipe and a vice or press to compress the coast/ direct clutch spring.

Two pieces of looped bailing wire to drop in the forward clutch assembly.

And to align the pump half's, flip the pump into your empty case - upside down - and torque your bolts.

Ohh, and a ATSG manual!

If you can follow the directions in the book and have patience there is no reason you cannot do this yourself!!!!

Been holding up fine to many years of abuse and heavy towing. The last few years the truck has probably been around the +600HP mark. I am about to find out how it likes 450/400's....:D

The only down side you can mod the pumps as bts and other builders can, unless you know a trans guy. Best thing to do is buy the book from ford and it has a step by step rebuild book. I did mine with my buddy who builds diesel trans for a living. Other then that the 4r100 isn't to bad. Mine has close 10k and not a problem. My buddy who's a trans guy got me all the parts. I also got the stallion t.c. just because that's what bts uses. my trans guy was friends with Brian at bts before he moved out here. It does what I need it to.

I'm pretty well set on a Stallion tc, Suncoast rebuild kit and valve body, mag-tech deep pan, 6.0 trans cooler, and still thinking about a controller
