Hey guys, I'm having some sloppy 2-3 shift issues..And some headaches

I attempted the rebuild with suncoast parts IRONPAC3 kit. Long story short I didn't install the direct clutch piston correctly and left a retaining ring out on the pump after installing the transgo hd 2 shift kit..

I then took it to a professional builder to rebuild it again and fix everything
About 1k miles later, I felt a 2-3 slip and burnt fluid. so I took it back and they went through the trans and replaced questionable seals.

Last night on my way back from San Antonio with about 5000 lbs behind me, I noticed another 2-3 slip..Gah!

Does anyone have any ideas on what it could possibly be? I am going to possibly replace the pump and take out the check valve on the valve body from the shift kit, add the gogo direct solenoid, and use mercon SP instead of the LV that the shop put in.. This is all on Eric's tuning, ever since the rebuild, my stock trans shifted better :/

Lv fluid is the new sp sounds like you need a new direct piston or Teflon sealing rings around the drums

Thanks 4 the reply, they replaced the piston on rebuild # 2 after I FUBARd the first one..the most recent rebuild is better than rebuild #2, but if it does slip in 2-3, it is much more rare :/

Update: spoke to Doug this morning, he said it wouldn't be the shift kit, and the modified solenoid wouldn't help the 2-3. he told me to put it back to stock, and it never slipped! waiting for Eric to contact me back, hopefully it just needs some tuning tweaks!

Don't mean to hijack, but I'm having similar issues myself...

I have a real lazy 2-3 shift. I wonder if the solenoid is sticking... I just had mine rebuilt by Ford as well. Can't really notice it on stock tuning because it's so slow and the shifts are so soft to begin with, but with even a mild tune I can feel it take forever to make that shift. Any thoughts? I don't think we're having the same issue, I don't feel mine slipping, just takes a while for the shift to happen.

Hmm that could be my issue as well, by slip I mean there is a 100rpm spike before third gear completely engages, and it is very intermittent..I wonder if it has anything to do with the different fluids..

I'm using the LV fluid myself. This trans has done this for a while. It was different before though, I brought it in to Ford to have it looked at, and after reading the paperwork it seems all they did was swap two solenoids around in my trans and all of a sudden now I've got a lazy 2-3 shift, so I'm pretty confident mine is a solenoid. I don't feel slippage, just that long hanging shift and slight RPM increase until it engages. I've had slippage previous to the rebuild, so I know what that feels like.

Also FWIW, the SP and LV both smell burnt even new, so it's hard to tell in that regard.

A ha! Mine has the slight RPM spike as well (~100 Rpm).. I'll replace a solenoid, do you know the name of the solenoid for the 2-3 shift is?

I don't, I would actually like to get the P/N's for all of them. I don't think they're very expensive from Ford for all of them even. I will also add the GoGo direct solenoid and an 08 trans pan/filter to the mix too. I want this one to last.

Anyone out there have the P/N's and maybe a diagram showing which one is where in the trans?

Thanks

gah my ATSG manual back in college station has the p/n's! but I got an e-mail back from Eric. What he said makes sense, i'll c/p some excerpts.

""Your trans should be shifting like stock, when it's stock. If there
are any delayed shifts(slipping) stock, it will be amplified with
power tuning. I looked over your tunes and they are the setup is
normal, nothing crazy.

I'd return to stock and drive yoru truck a week or so in stock mode,
so the trans can learn. I'd drive it easy, hard, put it through the
paces to make sure it's shifting perfectly. If it's not 100% perfect
stock, it's going to be way worse tuned.

Thanks

Eric""

Does it eally take that long for our trans to learn? I didn't think they were as bad as the allisons were for that.

They take a solid 10 times of accelerating to like 50-60mph and slowing back down with varying amounts of acceration to get the transmission in a constant way of shifting. At least that is what I have seen. I know when I load a new tune, I drive it pretty easy for about two days worth of driving back and forth to work to make sure it has a decent pattern developed for shifting. I could just be anal retentive but my tranny seems to shift awesome IMO.

The 2-3 is the intermediates coming on. The int solenoid is the same as the TCC, OD, and L/R. Fluid doesn't matter. We use regular dexron/mercon without issue. Did you replace the piston in the center support?

This is the exact same type of fluid i use Tadd...it's what suncoast recommended me to use. So i just went to carquest and got the good 'ol carquest brand dexron/mercon. Every once in a while i have a lazy 2-3 shift, but not all the time. I have a suncoast superduty rebuild kit with a gogo diesel modded direct drive solenoid. I've been thinkin about replacing the other solenoids with new ones from ford.

Is there any negative effect to using Ford SP with a suncoast rebuild kit? I thought it was the solenoids that needed the special fluids to operate correctly?

yes I replaced the piston..I thought these solenoids were VERY picky on fluid..

Y'all can get diagrams of solenoid assembly procedures and placement from the parts counter at your local dealer. What's nice about them is they label all related parts nearby with OE p/ns too.
