Okay guys my truck has 80,000 miles on it and ive been running quicktricks looney tune on the stock bolts for around 10,000 miles. The truck hasent missed a beat no coolant loss or anything but i know its only a matter of time. In the next month or so i plan on doing studs new gaskets heads checked all that good stuff.

I plan on doing a strictly reg return and valve springs/pushrods these are mostly being done for upcoming upgrades and since it will be easy to do with the cab up, dont really expect any power from these.

I am thinking i am going to try a cam, if i do i will be dropping the trans and pulling the ring off the crank and doing it that way. Is there anything else i should know about timing the cam? Anyone have info on how to do that. Ive done cams in v8 gassers and in big cats/cummins but never a powerstroke.

I am also hoping to get a apex ported manifold, funds allowing.

The long term plan is to run around a 190/75 injector and i think im going to try a madd stg 3 or 4 turbo next spring along with a built trans and fuel system up to the reg return.

I think the things i am wanting to do now will really shine when it comes time for turbo and injectors.

What are your guys opinions on this anything else I should do while I have the cab up?

Sounds like a solid build plan. I recommend an egr delete also if you don't already have one, Oh and keep saving up cause once you get your Stage 3 or 4 your trans will be next to go...:evil

Can't help on the cam. Might look into a trans those 190s will prolly eat it unless you take it easy but eventually you will need a built one. Also you could get into an s366 for cheaper than a stg3 or 4 I believe.... Should be a fun truck when your done!

If you are doing a cam, I highly recommend doing pushrods, springs, and new lifters.

Already have one, plus the apex gets rid of it regardless. I am planning on doing the trans this winter then Inj/turbo this spring.

ike said trans this winter hopefully,I considered the 366 and I know I'd be cheaper but I think I am going to try a MADD just because lol

Building the fuel supply at the pump side should be done at the same time with the RR. Start with a sump and build whatever pump/filter combo you want. Keeping the stock fuel pump and injectors well fed is a priority till you go big.

From the reading I've done with stock injectors the stock pump is fine, please correct me if I'm wrong though. I already have my filters and bases and most fittings just need to decide on a fuel lab or aero pump, I may just do the full fuel system now then.
Anyone have more info on the cam and how to go about timing it?

I would do a Apex manifold before a cam. Till your ready to do rods I wouldnt do a cam and just bolt ons. Imho if your diving in the engine far enough to do a cam you might aswell do rods to.

Pretty sure you have to take the crank out to do a cam the adapter that the flywheel is attached to is balanced with the crank. Even if you take it off and put it back on the same way it will still need re balanced.

I thought the only reason for a cam was to help light non vgt chargers? In a 6.0. But I could be wrong. Would see the need for a cam with your Planning on a vgt.

You can take the balancer off the back of the crank when you do the cam, just make sure you mark where it was and put it back on at the same exact spot. That is what I did with my own truck and customers. Havent had a single problem yet, and I believe MPD, and Warren diesel both do it the same way I do.

Yes I understand that and thats the way I plan on doing it if I do, im wondering if I have to degree the cam or do anything special like that or do you just line up marks and thats it?
I would also buy new bolts for the balancer and check the runout.

There is two timing mark's, one on the cam, and the other on the crank. Line both mark's up when you instal and you should be set. I like to bar the engine over and rotate the cam one full turn to just make sure the mark's re-align.

^That, is all I wanted to know. I figured it would be marked but just wanted to be sure before I tear it down. And yea I always like to bar a motor over after any work like that is done, just more peace of mind really.
Im currently waiting on some replys for quotes on pricing and will update as I get parts and get started.

I totally agree, even after doing headgasket's I bar the engine over. Seen way to many bent push rod's cause they where installed wrong while I worked at ford.

So unless you completely miss the lifter cup...or the rocker arm...how exactly is a pushrod installed wrong?

Just wondering...
