One of my best repair videos. Here is the most common concern I see and the REAL fix, there is a tsb from ford on changing idler pullies, I have never seen that work. New belt and tensioner fixes them everytime. The other thing that sounds like a belt chirp on these unfortunately is the roller lifters failing as the need bearings give out. Let's hope your truck doesn't have that issue and this is it.

Having the belt chirping on my Job 2 6.4 it has PTO 5R110W tensioner shiny like chrome. belt shredding 2nd tensioner and belt changed at 30,000 miles other than the original on the truck since new 78,000 miles. How much is the tensioner? IIRC is the belt $70 and why is my tensioner and belt going bad every 30,000-40,000 miles? Great video by the way.

Are you using ford belts and tensioners? Belt shredding is due to a few things rough pulleys any of them, belt cocked due to separated tensioner, and pulley alignment. Is the backing shredding or the edges? One of the tensioners is 160 other is around 178. They changed part numbers again too. The newest anti squeak belt ford has come up with for this issue is AC3Z-8620-B and is way cheaper now at $37.24. Also just an FYI Ford Motorcraft parts are now warrantied 24 months UNLIMITED MILES starting oct 1st today.

Just did mine in 1.5 hrs without pulling anything more than the cold side pipe. Replaced the belt and idlers while i was in there. Definitley a helpful video, though.

anti squeak belt--- thats funny. It may take a little longer, but will eventually squeak again.

Yeah it was more like this- "replace the main FEAD drive belt with a new service belt that has an improved noise resistant rubber compound" but yeah funny I thought too.

Yeah that's how long ours take about an hour, the way I do it, just seems drawn out because of the one handed wrenching and filming. I like the more open work area.

Don't blame ya there! I figured I'd try to reinvent the wheel by trying it...at the cost of some skinned knuckles, and "creative" language.

Gates has a "Green Stripe" heavy duty belt made out of some different kind of compounds(It's Green) It is used on that world traveling 7.3 (Discoverer?),that has crossed from Europe all the way across Russia. The part# for 7.3 is K081223HD. I believe the 6.0 and 6.4 also have replacements. Amazing belt that wears SO MUCH BETTER!

Im intimately familiar with the Gates product line and belts in general (working for them and selling them for 25+ years kinda does that)...

Ive recently spoken to our guys about this issue and the only solution is to change the tensioner and the belt. The noise comes from misalignment due to tensioner failure (or developing failure) and also by tolerance stack in the mounting components (brackets, tensioner, engine block casting, etc). Max acceptable misalignment is 1 degree (about .060") per foot of span length (the unsupported area between the idlers). The 6.4 drive layout is especially prone because of the very short runs between grooved idlers at/near the tensioner. For those who have done this change, you've seen how short these distances are and can now understand the issue.

On the belt, we have one OEM construction that is a lower noise compound but don’t currently offer it in our Green Stripe replacement line. Im not aware that our competitors have one either. All belts are built just slightly different and these differences can sometimes make a difference in how the belt sounds--for a little while. Remember, no matter what belt you use, and have misalignment, the noise will eventually come back. Manufacturing investments are big with some belt construction changes, so I'm not sure when/if a quieter belt may be available in the replacement line.

I know this is an old thread, but I need to change the tensioner and the serpentine belt. Which is the best belt to use?? I'm gonna need a part number for the belt and for the tensioner then too...

Use OEM Ford tensioners and idlers only. Every aftermarket was an OE unit with the Ford part number ground off, but the cost difference was in lesser quality bearings from China. :lame: My A/C tensioner was making a bunch of noise, so it only made sense to replace the main tensioner while I was in there despite having failed (and replaced) around 30k... 95k now.

The OE stuff came from Sunrise Ford on here, super helpful. Even pulled a tensioner from a box for me to confirm the bearings were not Chinese garbage.

I DID go with the Gates green belts, found them at Rockauto for a decent price. Kept the old as spares and tossed them in my tool box.

Consider Lisle's '43300' fan clutch wrench set that attaches to your air chisel. Would have taken me far less time had I removed the fan, live and learn. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...rue&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_9&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I just went around with this on my 2009. Hope it helps!

I forgot to reply to this thread back in 2013, better late than never LOL. Yes the dealer is using Ford OEM parts, truck has 102,000 miles now and the belts are starting to sqeak again.

Is anyone running a tensioner from Napa. Mine went bad and can't get one from ford for a few days. Or are the aftermarket ones a waste of money?
