hi guys new to the forum. i bought a early 99 f350 with 72,448 miles. truck is super super clean. i have put 1200 miles on it in a month and half.

the problem i am having now is i hear a noise that sounds like the engine has a nock. it off idle. yes i know diesel are loud and sound liek knocks but this is a louder more distinct knock noise. i do not beat the truck up either. all it has done to it is a mbrp 4 inch turbo back exhaust, s&b intake and egt trans and boost autometer pillar gauges.

i just bought a php hydra. on its way. but before i get crazy with this truck i need to make sure its good to go.

any local members close to or in oak harbor that can go for a quick ride with me. and also me ride along in yours for a block or two to hear the differnce.

i know the e99 has a torque converter issue. i know it has nothing to do with this truck because i just had it replaced. made the dodge dealer i bought it from replace it. i know they did not look over the truck them self instead paid the oil change shop next door do it. all they did was detail and change the oil and filter.

it seems to be loosing power and clear up on the top end. (i can see dirt debrie on boots for intake and on intercooler boot on passenger side. i will clean and retorque when i get time this weekend work nites us navy) also sometimes it cranks for a bit before starting after its been run and warm. however no smoke comes from this truck. oil is super clean after 1200 miles. not even black yet. im sure the previous 2 owners took really good care of it. any help is appreciated. in the navy and on a veyr veyr tight budget so cant afford to just go and through new sticks in it and call it good. my craftsman scan tool shows no computer codes.

egts are usually 4-6 driving and the egt probe is just behind turbo. bought it this way. have only seen egts get close to 1,000 when driving slow up hills 4x4'n. thanks for any help

Could you post a video of the truck making the noise? The egt gauge should be mounted before the turbo. Most guys mount it in the drivers side manifold.

i can try and get a video. tomorrow its going to be really hard to diagnoise from a video as well since these engines are loud to begin with. but i will try my best. the gauge was already installed wheni bought the truck. i might switch it out and have my exhaust hole welded closed.

Could be a bad injector for the knock, but would also like to hear a video. As fsr as "dirt" on the I/c boots, its because powerstrokes have a closed ccv system, and it routes the oily vapor from the crank case into your intake abd through your i/c and boots, which were never designed for oil and it deteriorates them. You can vent it to the atmosphere so it doesnt deteriotate the boots further, but it wouldnt hurt to replace them. Definitely check them for tears or holes. Make sure the truck has clean fuel and air filters too, and not just the oil. It also wouldnt hurt to clean the ebps and tube

Theyre really not THAT loud, and I guarantee we can get it figured from a video. Some of the most knowledgable powerstroke people online are on this site.
