I have have a late 99 crew cab 4x4. The ABS light decided it wanted to come on today. The brakes work fine. Fluid is full etc. I did have batteries that were on the way out. First time abs light came on was this morning. It then went off. Went to get the new batteries, the abs light went back off all day while running around. Then later today with the new batteries installed the ABS light came back on. I tried cycling the key three times to reset it. That did not make it go away. I have a scangauge, and it isn't showing any codes. One other thing, the speedo is set for 38" tires, and I am currently running a 35" tire, but went down to 35" tires about a month ago, so don't see why it would now randomly affect it.

Another problem, is the front left hub. I recently rebuilt the front end. I replaced everything but the drivers side hub. The truck was making a sort of growling noise few months later from the drivers side, so I figured it was that front hub. Sure enough when I pulled it off there was metal shavings on the back side. The inner part of the hub was rubbing against the seal and inner axle shaft. So I replaced the hub, thinking that would fix the problem, but it is still making the same sound. I wish I would have taken pictures to better explain. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I said above that I scanned it and showed no codes besides EBPV because its unplugged. I have read numerous threads on problems other people have had. Basically narrowed it down, it could be coming on because of speedo, changing batteries can trip it for some reason, the VSS, or a brake problem. I'm thinking it was because the batteries.

I'm still lost on the hub though. I will more than likely tear it back apart this weekend and see what the heck is going on. I do not understand how the back of the hub is rubbing the inner axle and the seal. It spins in two different ways, when 4x4 not engaged and when it is engaged. Luckily will have it at the shop this weekend to detail the exterior, so will put it up on the lift to check it out. Any advice would be great!

Will do, luckily ABS light wasn't there today, probably caused from the battery change. I'm hoping I can find the hub problem, ill let you know what I find out.

When my hub went, it took out the ABS sensor. Hard to tell in the picture but it rubbed the end of it. Could be your problems are related??

I believe the late 99's don't have the ABS sensor. I finally have some time and am going to first pull the lock out off and drive it around to see if that is the problem. If that doesn't fix it, then I think it is a bad inner axle bearing.

Well problem still isn't fixed with the axle. I have had it apart two more times now. It seems to be related with inner axle being too snug. I found a diagram and all of the parts are in the hub etc. Any ideas would help out greatly. Pretty much lost at this point.
