What should be done when you get higher miles on your 7.3L? I'm looking for advanced things like taking off parts to clean them like the ICP and such.

If you haven't done the pre-pump mod...I would get that done...along with the CCV mod. As for cleaning things...the exhaust back pressure tube tends to get sooted up along the way and can affect performance.

What you need to do is just spend some time searching and reading the forums until you know your 7.3 better than your mother. Once it's as familiar as an old friend, you'll know exactly what you need to do to keep it happy. Lots of upgrades and mod to make the old girl keep purring.

Thanks for the heads up on the back pressure tube

Dear lord that doesnt look good at all, would deleting a fuel bowl be better?

then again all that gunk ends up in your engine and injectors

Filter filter filter. Make sure you are getting clean air then I would add a coolant filter and then gauges to make sure you are staying in the safe zone temp wise. I wouldn't just clean the IPR. I would just wait until it starts giving issues.

Guzzles site is great. In due time I'd try to do everything he's done on there.

That fuel bowl is not like that because of lack of maintenance. There is oil getting in there somewhere. Mine came off for the first time in its life at 235,000 miles. It was clean as a whistle.

If you deleted the fuel bowl you would be installing a post pump filter elsewhere so you would still be getting the proper filtration.

Nope... guess again... that isn't oil... Its mill dust... It came off a mill truck. Sure if had a new fuel filter when it came in, and they change them religiously, but when you fail to pull the drain, clean, than install new filter, it builds up... I had to take this one off because when I went to open the drain, nothing happened

I can vouch for this. My bowl had so much dirt in it that when I went to drain the bowl to fix a leak nothing happened. The dirt was sooo packed into the drain valve it scored the ball. It dried like epoxy. I had to remove the valve and drill the crud and then chip it out. That was with 240k miles. I change my filter three times a year. Ive never changed one because I HAD to. I always keep em changed. Being off road for the first 230k miles my truck had dirt under it everywhere. Apparently it was getting into it also! LOL

What do you consider higher mileage? And what have you done so far?

Im at 179k, changed some fluids right off the bat and changed all filters. With this being my first diesel a Minnesota winter is making me nervous.

Where abouts in MN are you located? I'm over here in NE SoDak.

Just remember to

1. plug it in at night if you are going to use it the next day.

2. make darn sure the glow plug relay/glow plugs work as they are supposed to

3. make sure you are running winter blended diesel.

I have been stranded because of my failure to pay attention to all 3 of these...at different times.

Arent you at like 388K?? LOL

Yea, and I've finally decided this flushing the coolant every 100k is for the birds. I'm going to go with the ELC when I hit 400k and not have to worry about it. :D

Change all the fluids. Brake fluid, coolant, the atf in the power steering, tranny, diff, t-case, etc. Change your serpentine belt if you don't know how old it is. Double check your glow plugs with an ohm meter and GPR with a volt meter to make sure they are functioning properly. Maybe even wire a LED into your GPR so you know how long they stay on. Check the wiring to your block heater to make sure it's not corroded. Don't let your tank drop below 1/4 full and carry around some Diesel 911. I'd think about using some anti-gel additive too up there. Synthetic oil might be a good idea also.

What kind of temperature are you guys talking about. Last winter it was only 24 F and my truck started just fine on the first try without being plugged in.
