Our current worktruck is a 99 V10 with 150k miles, we bought it in early December and have just been working the piss out of it. Plowed snow all winter, and then got a flatbed with boxes and has been our main worktruck since then. I put 3-400 miles a week on it, so i'd like to address some issues it has.

1. Lack of power. It is a 5 speed, ECLB, 4wd, and i'd say with the bed and all weighs over 8k. Its not bad to run around empty, but throw a trailer behind it with some weight and it becomes a dog. Anything we can do to give it some more ass? It does average 12-13 mpg's with mostly city driving and a good bit of towing.

2. It has some ticking. One tick sounds like a lifter but is constant, so i'm assuming its an exhaust manifold. The other definitely sounds like a lifter, and comes and go's. How hard/expensive is it to replace the manifolds, and do these engines have lifter issues?

3. Whats a good replacement clutch? Ever since mid-winter the clutch has been making some noise. Some days it will make a grinding noise when the pedal is depressed, other days its a rattle like a broken spring, and some days its completely quiet. It still drives and shifts fine, but something that needs addressed. It is a plow truck and tows often so we need something comparable to the stock clutch.

If you have any tips/advice for these engines let us know. We've had a bunch of 5.4's over the years and still have one, but this is our first V10. So far we've had no issues out of it and its made us a ton of money, but we're hoping to sell it in a year or so and get some more diesels.

Having owned 2 V10's a 2v version and the 3v version, I will tell you my experiences. In my opinion the v10 is the best gas engine Ford has ever made, especially the 3v from '05 to the present. The best bang for the buck performance mod is gears. For stock sized tires 4:30's are the best, then a tune from Mike at 5star tuning, and if want a better sound just switch out the muffler. As far as a clutch, just stick with factory parts unless you are going to run a supercharger or tubo, if that's the case then go with Centerforce. Make sure and change the plugs at 50,000 mile intervals if you do you will never have a plug issue. The ticking is probably exhaust manifold studs, in my neck of the woods there is a guy who the local dealership calls in to do studs and he is cheap, the dealer won't even bother doing them anymore. You need to find someone like that or just do it yourself. Also you could get Banks headers, they do make a nice set of headers but they are pricey, Doug Thorley also makes headers for these trucks. Using their fasteners usually eliminates the stud issue.

My dad has an 02 v10 with 110k on it. Used mostly for working on the farm and towing when needed or hauling mine around. But his has a bad tick that is constant and his is from some broken manifold bolts. He wants to get that fixed with an exhaust system as well. I bought him a cai and he gets around 12 in town also. It does what he wants it to since he's not into hot rodding anymore but if I had it I'd throw some lower gears in it to help out with towing heavy.

I'm driving a 2002 F250 V10 with 197,000 miles as my company truck now. Runs OK but I never really haul anything with it. Gets about 12 at the best. I did learn about the spark plug blow out issue rather quickly one morning. After doing all the research, I's say people are afraid to tighten the plugs, then thay come loose, wear out the threads and blow out. So one of my ticks was a loose plug that blew out later. I have broken studs on the manifolds too. There is a drilling jig made for drilling the studs. I'm getting one. I think there is a lifter or vailve train issue coming up too though, when it is cold it tick / taps a while. Seems worse the older the oil is. It did start all last winter even at -24 not plugged in so I'm happy with it for a truck people were afraid to go on a 200 mile trip in when I ended up with it!

Bringing this back up, truck developed a miss yesterday coming home from the jobsite. Only at an idle, get the RPM's up and it seems fine. Not a constant miss either, seems to come and go. Plus the muffler is rotted out so its just amplifying the miss.

So its time to do plugs and exhaust. I'm figuring Ford plugs for it, but who makes a good exhaust for these trucks? Manifolds look pretty healthy so not gonna dick with em for now, but we need something from the manifold back. It is a work truck so not looking for anything louder than stock.

Funny you brought this back up. Dad is fixing to buy an exhaust system for his and I'm unsure of what to tell him to get. Wonder if magnaflow or flowmaster has a bolt on kit?
Edit: I just looked and seen where they both offer cat back ex systems. The flowmaster kit was like $270 and not sure about the magnaflow. Maybe this helps some

I bet your miss is from one of the spark plug coils. I had a 5.4 that did the same thing. It missed intermittently. I just replaced all of them. They say once one goes the others are not far behind. You can find them on ebay for about $10 a piece.

Should i stick to Ford coils or is there a good aftermarket option? I do see it being a coil though, next morning it had a slight miss and since then its been perfectly fine.

I used the eBay coils as well. I kept my old ford ones as spares because I figures I had at least 8 good coils.
