Noticed that a local place has high sulfur diesel for about 50cs less a gallon. I remember reading about it being an option in my h&s manual as long as the *** and *** are gone. Was wondering if anyone on here is running it and if there are any possible issues from running it. It's got the dye in it which I've been told is meant for off road equipment and whatnot.

not sure that is high sulfer, it is likely just died diesel which is meant for off road use hence the cheaper price (road tax removed). if you get caught with it in your truck on road, it is a federal offense.

Most off road fuel is not taxed for highway use that's the reason for the dyed ! If u get dipped on road use big fines !!

It says high sulfur right on the pump. Are there benefits besides price? I thought it was better performance, you get better mileage? I can't imagine why I'd ever get checked but might not be worth the risk. Surprised they sell it at a drive up pump like that if you can't drive on the road with it

Ok so here's the thing, High Sulfur Diesel is imported, and I highly doubt that's what you're seeing. I could be wrong, but there's just no use for it anymore since the Fourth Reich *EPA* has gone off the reservation on Diesel emissions. The pump might be old and have old labeling, but more than likely it's off-road diesel.

You might be seeing Low Sulfur Diesel but that's going to be dyed red and for off road use only. Don't quote me on the color, some states use green, but Red dye has been the standard.

ULSD is used in ALL OTR diesel applications now. Only reason they keep Low Sulfur diesel is because of agriculture. Tons and Tons of farms still use diesels that need that extra sulfur for lubrication in the mechanical fuel systems. Otherwise I'm sure the EPA would figure out a way to screw over farmers even more than they do now...

Says tax exempt high sulfur for off highway use

Yeah, it's probably an old sticker on the pump, but if you're really interested ask the station manager, they'll be able to show you the invoice. I haven't seen HSD in a looooong time.

Alright well say it is high sulfur is there any benefits like power or mileage. Or any risk in causing problems?

There's no such thing as Low or High Sulphur diesel anymore. All diesel fuel leaving the refineries is Ultra Low Sulphur diesel. That's it. Nothing else available. Off Highway diesel is Ultra Low Sulphur dyed red. That's the difference. Red dye. If the DOT dips your tank and finds it, it's usually $100/gallon capacity fine. 28 gallon tank means $2800 fine.

I was told also that nobody can get it anymore. Toedter oul said there #2 hearing oil is high sulfur but if you try to buy 500 gal and the delivery driver shows up and syspects its for a vehicle he'll leave and you pay a 25% restock fee.

Learn something new every day! It's been a few years since I've been back on the farm, guess everyone running older equipment just buys additives in bulk now?

That's your only option if you think you need it. Most diesel you buy, especially in bulk for farm use, is a bio blend of around 5%. The bio is used to add lubricity.

My buddy has quite a bit of older tractors and we were talking about this last Friday. He said he had a few fuel leaks but he doesnt know if its related to the fuel or they just were bound to happen. Everything runs just fine.

It's an old sign. The above statements are correct. It's all ULSD. Died red. One 8000 gallon tanker of red die is somewhere in the neighborhood of a $1M. But it covers a bazillion gallons.

BTW. The fine is pretty standardized if you get dipped. $10,000 per day the fuel is in use. They are extremely serious about avoiding road taxes.

Not worth saving $250 annually.

And this. I've ran across both fines. (Not my personal fines)

BTW. The dot boys doing the dipping are dressed like farmers. Kinda like the TV show "to catch a predator"

They look like average Joes in wranglers and a pearl snap shirt. (If your at a sale barn). The occurrence has been more rare lately as 99% of the farmers are scared to actually do it anymore. There will be the few on here that say BS I always do and never been caught.

My advise is pay the piper before he catches you sometime. And it would be mighty American of you to pay your taxes like the rest of us do anyways.....

Certainly hurts fuel mileage too. Ask a farmer.... or me... lol.

It's been vastly tested in the field at this point that bio blend decreased fuel economy. Hence the large market for aftermarket tuning of farming equipment now.

I did a small study of this very subject with my own vehicle and fuel consumption of stationary large bore diesel engines.... results is about a 5% decrease in economy. The increase was added back by blending Naural Gas into the diesels intake offsetting the cost. (At a large cost for a new bio fuel blend system NG/Diesel) lol

I will say the absolute best mileage my old 7.3 ever got was when I added 4 gallons of homebrew an old boss of mine gave me. Raised the average for that tank 7mpg.
