Bad Injectors?

I've been thinking....how can one tell if it is really time for new injectors? Do they get louder, poor performance, fuel mileage decrease? Reason I'm asking is because my truck is almost at 178000 miles. I do regular oil changes with UOA, I run an FS2500, an Air Dog 150 as well as the stock fuel filter and Howes fuel additive. I have noticed it sounds more "clackier" than usual. Almost reminds me of what the school bus sounded like back in elementary school. Buzz tests, contribution tests and everything else AE can do all come back good. So how can one tell when the time has come for new sticks?

Put simply......when it runs like azz.

I have seen numerous trucks that run great with stock injectors and are nearing 300k. If you stay up on your regular maintenance there is no reason they should not last at least that long.

Had a couple 300k+ OBS trucks used every day towing trailers, they should last.

Honestly with 300k miles you could have them rebuilt and notice a change, but would it be worth the money... i dont think so.

If it were me id go stage 1s and have everything looked at and gone through, just so your at peace of mind and get a little extra out of the situation

If your going to rebuild them I agree with having the bumped up to stage 1's.
And stay on top of your oil changes. A very common factor for injectors going bad before they should.

Maintenance is regularly performed. Trucks runs great with no loss of power or economy. They just have gotten a little more clackier. Once the spare motor is done hybrids will be in order!!

obviously...any dead miss could be an injector or an internal engine problem (piston rings/cylinder walls)..

typical symptoms of high mileage (7.3L) injectors are...

hard to start when cold

runs like crap (or very reduced power) when cold (may run better/fine when warm)

if you can have a buzz test performed, LISTEN to the sound of each injector buzzing...any injectors that sound weak, or muffled during the buzz test are caused by normal wear at the poppet valve...as the injector (poppet) wears...it moves further and further away from the solenoid, which can delay the movement of the poppet.

since the inj poppet moves further from the solenoid...this will cause a mechanical delay in the time between when the inj receives the signal from the IDM and when the fuel is actually injected...ie..retarded inj timing.

On almost any vehicle...retarding the inj timing will result in poor fuel economy and less performance.

keep in mind that one bad tank of fuel (gas, water, poor filtration, low fuel pressure, etc) can wreak havoc on the plunger and barrel assemblies...and can result in a misfire or skip from the engine...

we see poppet valve wear cause issues (poor cold starts, lack of perf) on injectors in the 200k mile range...some go more, some go less.

Poor engine (piston ring sealing) condition can increase the poppet valve wear since the engine oil is picking up carbon (soot) from the combustion process...

carbon is pretty hard stuff last I checked...so excessive soot in the oil will cause increase wear at the poppet valve..causing the valve to move further away from the solenoid...delaying injection, etc.

That never dawned on me! The ring being critical to keeping the oil cleaner. It makes perfect sense and jesus it sure has to come into play on highed mileage motors. Im at 260k but compared to my buddies 80k mile truck mine runs better. More power for sure.
