BDP chip

Bought a BDP 6 position chip off a member for my 97 and was just curious if I had to get it reburned for my trucks ECM or will it work as long as it is off the same year truck.

Being a complete newb to obs's how would I check the doc code on the chip?

As long as both trucks have the same transmission (auto or manual) it should work.
To check the dpc code of the tunes you would have to send it in to a tuner.

Will it hurt anything if I try it? Both trucks were the same, 97 autos

If both trucks were Federal or both were California, then it will work just fine.
