just like the title says, looking for the best placement of a muffler on my 2012

I seem to remember awhile back a talk about this, i am wanting the least amount of cab noise. I was thinking that as far forward as possible will be the best. Truck has the stock tailpipe section with the resonator so i dont think it will be good to put it to far back.

I would think further forward would make it quiet in cab and further aft would make it quieter at the end of the exhaust.

On gassers with flowmasters and such we always want them as far back as possable. Very much pipe after a performance muffler usually makes it crackle more and makes them have a higher pitch. Idk on a diesel though, I'm curious how it will sound with it forward with all the turbulance in the long pipe. Without a turbo I bet it would sound like a turd, but with it I bet the hiss will be louder the farther forward you place it. But I'm guessing.

I'd like to think that the more forward it is the quieter it'll be.

I have thought the same thing, only thing im worried about if there is any resonating or anything in the muffler it might transmit in the cab since its right under it. But that is just a thought

don't limit yourself!

one in front, one in rear :D

I have a flow thru muffler and then i have one of them pipes with the twisted deal down the center, so i can always run that too. Only thing is with that i know for sure that it was a restriction when i had compounds on my 6.4

Thats what i am worred about too, the vacuum cleaner sound is mainly what i am wanting to kill. 6.4 guys with stock turbos probably know the best way to do this LOL

The Moroso/FTE auger style muffler/resonators are a restriction no doubt...

Do you want to kill/cancel the turbine whistle sound as well as toning down the overall volume or do you want turbine noise? Or do you not care either way?

are you running full 4"? full 5"? 4" into stock 3.5"?

My recommendations will change for each scenario, but they will follow a similar trend in that I'm going to recommend a smaller muffler/resonator up front and a bigger one back near the tailpipe.

Highest flow with decent sound suppression and almost complete abatement of turbine sound I would do something like a Dynomax 17537 as soon as possible after the downpipe. It's a 4" in/out 6" diameter with a 22" long body.

Then in the traditional muffler position, do a 4" packed style non-louvered muffler. Biggest one you can find.

SLIGHT reduction in flow with better sound abatement, but less turbine abatement would be the Donaldson M085171. But the packed Dynomax up front will eat up most if not all of the turbine sound.

Or you could sub the M085171 for the water heater M090544 for even more silencing with minimal flow impact. It's a long son of a gun though. almost 4ft long body length with a 9" diameter vs. a little over 30" long body w/ 8.5" dia on the M085171.

If you want all the turbine, the M085171 out back and possibly a small non-packed resonator up front. There are outfits that make 12" or so long perforated tube muffler/resonators with no packing.

Push comes to shove, you can take something like a 5.9 CR cat and hollow it out and integrate it. A hollow expansion chamber acts as a resonator and as long as it has a nice taper on the rear, it should flow fine. It's not quite as effective as a perforated tube style, but it is effective.

Just saw your last post. That Dynomax is an absolute hairdryer killer on the 6.4's. Couple it with a resonator or two, and the truck sounds OEM.

Now, the single turbo of the 6.7 won't be as quiet obviously, but it should help a lot. Couple it with that 8.5" Donaldson out back, and I think you'll be quite pleased with how quiet the truck is :D

There was a guy that took the black cylinder off his stock piping and fanned it to work on his new truck the get rid of sound in the front of his muffler. Idk how or why but he said he did it and it helped lol

I put the muffler as far back as I could and it's pretty quiet sounds about like stock in the cab all I can hear is the turbo and tires so I'm happy. The woosh is gone but it does still have the hair dryer sound at part throttle but there isn't much I can do with that
