Waiting on tune for the truck but need to drive it to work. Running 205s. Should I run it with no tuning, a canned or tow tune, or run the custom gear head srlxx tune for stock injectors?

Ran mine with 225's and tuning for stock injectors for a few days last year. Was smokey and didn't run all that well but it got me around for a few days

I ran mine with 215/100's on the stock tune.
That size seems to work fairly well.

It did get a bit hot towing though.

If you had 200% nozzles I would say absolutely not on driving it. Too easy to melt a piston down, or blow a nozzle tip off with high icp.

Greg,

I apologize for my short and vague answer.

In tractor and truck pulling when you go really far with the edm or honing of a nozzle the "meat" is getting thin. So the structure of the nozzle can be weakened. This can be helped by using a 5 or 6 hole nozzle rather than a 7 or 8 hole nozzle.
Reduced strength and a tune with 1.5 ms on time and 4000 icp may cause the very tip of the nozzle to crack or blow off.
It would be safer to run 2.4 ms on time at 2300 icp.
This will deliver roughly the same amount of fuel.

In fact it was just 2 weeks ago we took the head off of a new 6.7 to remove the tiny piece of nozzle that blew off. I will look around the shop and see if I can find the pieces. Pictures are always nice.

EDIT: http://www.dieselpowermag.com/tech/1211dp_why_diesel_fuel_injectors_fail/
here is an article that was found on the first google search. text from article "Cracked nozzle from overpressure"

http://www.dieselnet.com/tech/engine_fi_nozzle.php
This is also a good write up.
PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE "SAC" AREA GREG :)

Sorry Greg I should have taken the time to explain this a bit more thoroughly.
Sometimes I forget we all are not into tractor and truck pulling.

So if the op would have said hey I have 300% nozzles I would have suggested a tune or checking with a tuner rather than risk cracking a nozzle.

Also Greg please remember I am just another guy with a wrench here and the Shop I work at should be left out of the thread becasue they do not sponsor here.

Thanks,
Justin

I'm with Greg, how is this going to happen? Also getting hot towing? You do realize most towing tunes, or at least ones for heavy towing use stock power and just trans tuning right? If you need to worry about egts on a stock tune you have major issues with your truck. I ran for 2 weeks with 190/75's on factory tune. Truck ran flawless, no smoke or anything.. was a lot peppier than stock I would compare it to a stock lbz duramax. You will be 110% fine.

I never noticed a problem with the truck but I suppose that is possible.
I never did any work to correct a problem but the truck did run cooler with a tune on it.
I watched the pid data on my scan tool and the tune made some signifigant changes to the strategy.
I am sure that both tuners are not delivering a tow tune that is simply a stock tune with higher trans pressure. I think they put a lot of hard work into the product and do an excellent job in maintaining wonderful drivabilty and street manners while still delivering very impressive performance.

I apologize if I upset anyone but I did want to give the OP good advice and probably used caution since it was not my repair bill to pay if a problem did occur.

Little more in depth then ramping up the pressure.. I cannot speak for all tuners but that is what I've heard from reputable sources...and on your use caution comment, if you knew what you were talking about you wouldn't need to tell people to be cautious in this situation.

I thought we were talking about subject matter related to the title of the thread "bigger injectors without custom tune".
If we are talking about something else than please excuse my ignorance.

We are talking about a 6.0, with 205/100 injectors. Pretty specific question and an easy answer.

Sorry for the derail op.
