Brake Issue

Put new brake shoes and pads, parking brake cables, and hardware on the truck a couple weeks ago. Had something stick and it wore my driver side shoes down past the material and through a couple rivets. Got the drums turned and everything looked fine. Didn't touch the front rotors.

But now when i apply pedal pressure there is a ratcheting/clicking sound coming from the brakes, and we think its coming from the rear end. Pulled both drums off and everything looked fine, but its still there. Also been having issues of the right rear tire wanting to lock up if i brake to hard, but not the left side. They feel like they are adjusted good. The truck coasts fine, pulls to the left slightly, and the wheels spin fairly freely. Overall it stops good, just the annoying clicking noise.

Anybody else ever have a problem like this?

The only clicking I could think of would be the self adjuster, but that usually clicks up in reverse driving, and its not loud enough to hear. I hate brakes, still havent tracked my issues down.

Thats what i've thought. Next time the drums are off i'm pulling the self adjusters and cables off, since i don't need em anyway, and to see if they are the problem. But its only when i'm on the brakes, and for the most part when i'm doing more than 10mph.

And brakes suck. My brother helped a buddy put new pads and rotors on his 03 6.0 yesterday, and last night one side was extremely hot and smoking. :fustrate:

Make sure on the rear brakes that the shoe with the longer length of friction material is the rear-most shoes (on both sides), shorter ones to the front. Cheers!

99.99% sure they are that way, cause we double checked before we put the drums on. Only way its wrong is if i thought they went on the other way, in which case they would be wrong. LOL

I'm gonna pop the drums off tomorrow night once gauges are done and i'll check em out.

Still haven't had a chance to touch the brakes yet, but they now seem to be really grabby at low speeds, like idling around or coming to a stop. And this morning they were screeching like a bitch.

Guess i jinxed myself last night when i said its been 2-3 weeks since i've had to work on this truck, which is a record.:fustrate:

The self adjuster adjusts when you use the parking brake, not when in reverse.

All of the springs in the same way as the other side? Sounds like a spring could be catching.

Well i tore the rear drums off tonight and overall everything looked good, except for the driver side. The inside half of the shoes and drum were gummed up, while the outer half looked good. Spent 30-40 minutes getting it clean and put back together. Not sure if its the axle seal or what, but i'm not super worried about it now.

But test drive shoes that they are working fine, and i have narrowed it down to the front brakes. My brother was walking beside the truck the other day and said that the clicking noise sounded like it was coming from the front end, and then the brakes squealed which they do every now and then, again from the front end.

So as it sits my front brakes rattle/click when i'm applying brake pressure, and at times they squeal like crazy.

the caliper brackets have stainless steel sliders that the pads ride on and only go in one way. if you put them in the wrong way they will rub against the rotor and make all sorts of terrible noises.

also do not remove the adjuster cable, then the adjuster barrell can freewheel and when the pads wear it can fall out causing total catistrophic failure, or the shoes can adjust maxed out and destroy themselves again, once you have them manually adjusted at intiial install they should be pretty much, well self adjusting. not to insult you, but are you sure you put them together correctly?

another thought a caliper could be not fully releasing, which would cause them to be very grabby, you will have no brake then all of a sudden they lock up.

sorry for the long post. not that long ago i went through the same rigga ma role your going through

another thought, are your hubs locked? the noise could be front driveline u joints

I was going to unhook the cable because i had an issue at one of it randomly coming unhooked. But since then they have been fine and are still on and working great. For now the rear brakes are perfect, other than the driver side shoe and drum gumming up.

I'm pretty sure that we put the sliders on the right way, but since we put them on i haven't had a chance to take a look.

Hubs are not locked.

But the truck stops fine now, no issues there. Just this rattling/clicking noise from the front end and something squealing every now and then, primarily after the truck has set for a little bit. But all noises are only when i am on the brakes, off the brakes everything is quiet and fine.

well if it sits for a while the discs can get some surface rust on them and they will squeal and grab a few times before it gets burnt off. if the cable is coming off its because it is stretched and has to be replaced, if you didnt already. does your truck have hub caps? they can click and rattle sometimes

We actually did something screwy when we put them together for the last time cause due to ****ty shoes we had torn them down 4-5 times in a day so the cable wasn't tight or something and popped out of the guide, i forget now what it was. But its fine now.

No hub caps or anything to rattle in the front end.

And the rust thing makes sense and i have thought about it, but yesterday i sat in line at a drive-thru for 5-10 minutes and they started squealing. Once i got on the road it cleared up and was fine. Not that humid and mid 80's here.

if its happening that quickly it might not be rust, my truck would do it overnight if it sat outside, within a mile or so they were fine. also occasional squealing is normal, you have two hard surfaces scraping against each other. if you get a piece of dirt or a foreign object it will squeal some and burn off.

The rust makes sense though cause it will do it in the morning after its sat. I've thought of dirt or a rock also, but i'd think that'd be all the time? But sitting for a period of time causes it, and after it moves for a little bit its fine and doesn't squeal until it sits again.

But i'm tired of these random ass problems that this truck has. I guess now my next step is going to be to pull the pads off and inspect everything and i'm going to take the rotors off and have em turned to try to eliminate them as an issue since its cheap and easy. Maybe by tearing it apart and putting it back together, whatever the issue was will be fixed and go away.
