I have 2 trucks, one is a 04 F350 4x4 the other is a 08 F250 2wd. If I ever get rid of the 04 F350 I would like to be able to swap transmissions. The trans in it was built by BTS. The 08 is stock. Is there any difference in the 2 transmissions other than the tail housing? Is it possible to swap the two?

I will give it one last bump. Does anyone know if there were any electronic changes or anything like that. That would prevent me from putting this transmission in a 2wd 08

No, it'll go right in. I had a 2wd trans put in my 05 4x4 before I traded it in so I could keep the NADP that was in it. You will however need a converter for the 08 or a flexplate from a 6.0 to make it work. If your converter is a better than stock one I'd just get the flexplate, they are like $40 from Ford.

Thanks Dustball. This makes selling it a little easier. I will lose a bundle, but the loss of cash on the trans was going to be the worst hit. I just put it in there less than a year ago.

I know what you mean lol. There was no way I was letting mine go to the dealer with a full NADP in it so I found one to swap in also.

It will bolt up however there are differences. As said above the convertor is different. I would swap converters. Not flexplates. The only other difference is the 08 o/d planetary set. It went from 4 to 5 gear. The whole od set is changed due to the number of teath. Just a stronger setup. Other than that good to go. Thats whats in mine.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think about them going with a 5th gear. I understand what you are saying with the transmissions, one having 4 gears and the other 5. You said "other than that good to go"
I am not sure what you are saying here. Am I going to have a 4 speed in the 08 and a 5speed in the 04 now? If no, then what do I do to make the BTS trans a 5 speed for the 08? If you could just over look my ignorance on transmissions and just give me the simplified redneck version of the fix, On the converters I guess I need to contact BTS?
Thanks for the info Bud

I think he's talking 4 gear planetary OD to a 5 gear planetary OD.

Same number of ratios, just one extra planetary gear in the OD

I think that is what he is saying. And the simple fix is??? You guys keep me hanging. How do I swap these trans out and make it work for both?

Sounds like the simple fix is either a torque converter or a flexplate.

I will have to take your word for it lol. Like I said "forgive my ignorance of an auto trans" but it just seems to me, if one has 4 gears, the other has 5 gears. Then it is going to take more than a torque converter to get the BTS trans to now have 5 gears when it use to have 4 gears. Not arguing with you, just making sure we are on the same page before I buy a torque converter?

I'm not an expert on auto transmissions either, but I think you're mistaking an extra planetary gear for an extra ratio in the box.

As I understand it, both transmissions shift 1-2, 2-3, 3-5, and 5-6 in most cases, with a "hidden" 4th gear for cold weather warm-up. The differences lay in the TC, flexplate, and particular design of the OD gearset itself.

Both transmissions have the same number of gears..all you have to do is switch converters...the internals of one part got changed to be stronger...it does not affect how many times the transmission will shift

Just swap a converter and they will work how they should

Camtom is correct. It is just another planetary gear. Just gives more support. The torque is much greater in the 6.4 than 6.0. It will work fine how it is but has the potential to break with added power. I broke mine then upgraded. Its pretty simple to do. Since you have both trans you could just swap hard parts and clutches. As for changing flex plates you can do the same and swap from truck to truck but i dont know the strength and/or balance of the 6.0 to 6.4.

Now I understand. Well, lets say I have a better understanding. I just wanted to be sure before I bought a torque converter. I do appriciate the help.
