can you wear out a 6 pos chip?

ive had a couple instances were when switching tunes the truck died. now lately my my knob feels a little sloppy. ive had this for a couple years and i bought it used. is it possible to wear out the knob notches? is it common to replace the switch itself after a while? im looking for a place that sells the switch and maybe a nice billet knob.
suggestions?

Have you checked the chip it self to see if it is still fully seated in the computer? Also I think there is a set screw on the knob, I'll have to look when I get off

That's correct , my son brought my truck home with the knob missing, set screw came loose.

As far as the knob goes, get a small allen wrench and tighten down the set screw.
