Hey guys long story short installer was installing warning lights in my 2016 6.7 and his wife hit the garage door button with the hood up and it took a good chunk of paint off so it needs to be painted which he's paying for. I didn't know if anyone has had a hard time getting the tri coat to match up. Ive read mixed results, My girlfriend works for a ford dealer so I know they will do a good job but I didn't know if they would be the best to paint it and have it almost match?

I've color matched several pieces on my truck and it is tri coat also. Local painter isn't the greatest but even he was able to match it spot on. At least to my eyes. What makes it such a hard color is its a 3 stage paint process hence "tri coat". If you already knew that sorry man. I've met people before that had no clue at all. All in all. If who ever paints it pulls the code which I believe is UG you shouldn't have any problems.

Mine was hit a while back....the color is spot on. They had to paint the whole bedside though for a spot about as big as a quarter...said they can't blend the pearl part of it.

Sweet good to hear people have had some luck with this color. The only stories I could find were from GMs tri coat none were ford. The dealer has this new color imaging camera supposedly that makes its easy to match so fingers crossed. And thats good to know I did not know they couldn't blend the pearl. Thanks guys I appreciate you responding, Unbroken hows the flares match up? Since its going down for paint I was thinking of having them throw some flares on as well.

Yea. I watched a guy do that. He sprayed the base. He sprayed the pearl and then stepped back and it looked like the gun was clogged, he fogged the damn panel and afterwards I said "wth did you do there at the end?". He said its called a dropcoat. They do it on white, infot silver, and magnetic to cover lines and "halos".

I think painting is definitely an art.

They're very close but not exact. Kind of like the plastic trim on the rear too cab corners...my stock ones are about 1/2 a shade off. I've never seen anyone match a plastic piece exactly. It's close enough I'm probably the only one to ever be able to tell a difference.

I had some work done on my Platiunim White truck. Looks perfect, but like others said, they had to paint the entire panel for a little spot.

Dropcoat is sprayed at twice the distance as the first coats, at a 45 degree angle, and twice as fast. It lays the paint and metallic flake down to eliminate mottling, tiger stripes and other issues you run into with metallics. It is an art. ;)

Well, this guy did it...but not at a 45° angle...the distance does sound about right though. He paints **** for sema/gm builds.

The way you explained it makes sense. You do that to change the "pattern" of previous strokes. I wish i knew how to paint more than single stage crap.

New Chevys and dodges seem to miss that last drop coat. I see lines in all the metallic paints on both manufactors. Caddies included LOL

I know exactly what you mean. My bishy sister just got a 100k dollar escalade its silver and the paint on the hood is striped. I laughed. Everybody was oooooh and ahhhhh.....i told my dad "how much would they have to charge if a drunk 15 year old wasnt painting the panels"

Ahe had an srt cherokee before...it was cooler in my eyes.

The estimate came back from the body shop today, had asked them to remove the hood and paint just the hood and reinstall it, they say they can't and won't ? The whole truck needs to go in. Everytime I've had a vehicle go in the booth the weather stripping gets discolored and cracks. Along with the chance of over spray. Not sure if I should find somewhere else or attempt to hash it out with them ?

I would. If they do things a certain way and you've been st thecreceiving end of their antics already its time to find a new painter.
