I was on my way to pick up my son today and all of the sudden my boost pressure dropped from 10 psi to 1psi at this time I started going through all the checklists I've compiled for things to cause this all the while thinking damn this truck is so loud I can't even think. So obviously I have an exhaust leak traced it to the manifold gasket. My question is at 228,xxx is this a common problem? And how bad are they to do? Oh it's on the drivers side. Thanks

Ive never personally done a set, but I've read the manifold bolts can be a pain to get out. I've also read sometimes the manifolds are warped and you can't reuse them? Not 100% sure on that though.

Pretty sure there is no gasket from head to manifold from the factory, but if you have to do it, any stuck bolts can be cut behind the manifold and the piece in the head should come right out as the stuck part is the bolt in the manifold.

You are correct, from factory there are no gaskets between the manifold and head. The bolts are a pain in the ass to get out of the manifold without breaking them.

Are you sure it's the manifold leaking and not the up-pipes?

Yes the up pipes are new t4 flanged no leak where they meet the manifold and there is soot on the head where its leaking from.

Ford part number for the manifold gasket pair is F4TZ-9448-A or IH 1814219C1.

Victor Reinz MS16319
Fel-Pro MS93489
Also for the pair

At http://rockauto.com. Look up 1996 7.3.

There are other brands

Soak it up real good and run through a few heat cycles; you will be surprised at what that will do. I got 12 of the 16 out with the impact and had to cut the rest or grind the heads off. Its not a real fun job to do. I'd suggest lots of anti seize when putting everything back together.

Thanks for the hints and advice. Made a pain in the butt job a little easier. Managed to not break a single bolt.

Glad it worked out for you. I have used the ford gaskets as well as the VR both manage to do the job...
I have had success getting the manifolds warmed up and re-torquing them too. I believe it is like 40 ft-lb
