Cooper Discoverer STT Pro vs. Toyo Open Country

Well we got our first snow of the year on Saturday, and my son called and woke me up at 9:00am complaining that he got my 2wd Ranger stuck in the ditch. I told him I'd go pull him out with the F250, but when I went to the barn to get the chains and shovel, hell's bells, I got stuck too. Had to winch myself out against the tractor. I guess it's time for some new tires.

I got a quote from one shop for some Toyo Open Countrys, and another quote from a different shop for some Cooper Discoverer STT Pros. I'm leaning towards the Coopers, just because I've had Coopers on other vehicles in the past and liked them, but I don't know anything about these Toyos. I've heard good things about them, just have no personal experience with Toyo. I need something that will handle good in the snow. I don't go off-roading, but I do live in the sticks and drive around on my property. Most of the time when I get stuck, or when I have to pull someone else out, it is on my own property. The public works guys do a pretty good job keeping the roads clear.

So, all that being said, which is the better tire, Toyo Open Country or Cooper Discoverer STT Pro? The price difference isn't much, but I like the Cooper brand. Some guys seem to go ape-crazy over Toyo, is there a reason for it?

I actually like and use both. Toyo on my '15 and Cooper on my '14.
Both are great tires I'm just not sure how either is in the snow which I think is more what you're concerned with.

I just bought the Cooper stt pro, and so far I love them. Highway they do great, road noise isnt bad. The lugs on the coopers are very meaty and grip awesome. I'm happy with mine and got an awesome deal

FWIW a lot of the guys that are into building overland rigs tend to run the coopers far more often than toyos. I am just not sure how well the coopers wear on our heavy trucks.

I have almost 50k on a set of Hercules (made by Cooper) tires. They will probably go over 60k. It's the exact same tire as the AT3. They are decent in the snow if you have a little weight (I add around 400lbsor so). The STTs should wear slightly faster, but have better snow/off road traction.

I have toyo AT2 extreme on my truck. In tge snow the truck was a MONSTER. However 15k later I am having a lot if issues with traction in the rain. The compound may be slightly too hard but I will deal since I only went from 17/32 to 15/32 in 15 k miles. My nittos were already at 1/2 life by now

I had toyo mts on my 2008.... I drove that thing through some ridiculous snow. Probably got 50k out of the tires too. Even with some spirited driving and burn outs.

extend the sipes all the way across the tread blocks.. it'll allow more flex and spread the siping out allowing more grip. i siped my brand new courser mastercraft mxt's.. they grab super good on any surface now..

live life full throttle
