What is the main Boise of this and what can I do to prevent it? It seems to be a common problem with these 6.4's.

ceramic coating the stock pistons and piston skirts has helped a lot, Rudys sells em coated

or Doug at GoGo machines the ring off the lip of the bowl and hard coats them which eliminates the area where the cracks start all together

Losing coolant will seize the piston in the bore or start to sieze itself. Cracks are from excess fuel, no or low air flow and that's an issue with the stock manifold, stuck injector and many more ways.

I have seen multiple cracked pistons at my local dealers on bone stock trucks. I think it has a lot to do with egt. My truck use to sit at 1400+ degrees for 20 mins under regen. Let me tell you that didn't happen too many times. I try to keep my truck under 1400 in short burst, and never see over 1200 towing.
