I have a 97 power stroke. When I was putting a ts 6 position chip in, I told a buddy to disconnect the batteries before i put the chip in. He said he did but he didn't know it had 2 batteries and I didn't think about the second one under the air intake. We plugged the chip in, truck fired but the chip did nothing. We figured that was because we didn't clean the other side of the receiver well enough. So we took the ECM out to clean it better, when I put it back in and tried starting it without the chip connected it wouldn't fire, just crank at the normal speed. Tried attaching the chip again and the same thing happened. Took the ECM out again and tried it to see what would happen and it did the same thing it did when the ECM was in the truck. What is going on here?

That's what I was afraid of... Is the ECM the same thing? I've heard it could be the ECM, are those used interchangeably?

Pull the chip and see if the truck starts. You don't need to disconnect the batteries but they keys can't be in the ignition or in any posistion of the switch. You also need to follow the instructions to the letter on cleaning the PCM contacts. Too little and nothing will happen, too much and you are out of luck.

PCM/ECM same thing different abrivations.

I know I didn't have the keys in the ignition. But everywhere else I've looked says the batteries need to be disconnected or else the ECM can get fried. I tried it with the chip out and still nothing.

I pulled the ECM out of the truck to clean the terminals and when I put it back in the truck, it wouldn't start

I know I didn't have the keys in the ignition. But I did have a battery connected. I've heard that will fry it

Here are the instructions from Total Diesel Performance for installing a chip. It says nothing about disconnecting the batteries. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many chips have been installed in trucks without disconnecting the batteries with no ill effects.

Did you remove the chip and see if the truck would start? Are you getting any lights such as the WTS light? Is the PCM connector tight and connected with the bolt?

The instructions that came with the chip said to disconnect them. I'm not getting a wait to start light and the check engine light is on.

You need to get your truck scanned for codes. Posting your location would be a good idea, you never know who is in your area and could come help you out/ scan your truck.

Recheck the under hood fuses. #22 and #9, don't just look at them but pull them and check them with a meter. You just may of smoked the ECM. Do you have any friends that you can swap one with just to see if the truck will start? If not start hitting Ebay or the parts stores for a rebuilt one.
