is the crank case vent kit a must or just a little extra assurance

It's a great addition to theses engines. CCV kit's have been around for decades and when setup up properly can really be beneficial to a engine performance.

the stock crank case oil separator doesn't do a good job IMO.

If you are now or plan to run any kind of aftermarket intake it is a nice addition. Will keep oil and gases away from the top of the motor.

Absolutes kit is top notch keeps all the excess oil in the canister and allows it to drain back. Just put one on my truck very easy install.
