Okay so I was just planning on replacing ball joints and u joints on the front axle along with the inner axle seal but I noticed there is a little play in the front pinion when I grab the yoke, probably about 1/8". First off, is it possible to get a new crush sleeve and just re-torque the pinion nut if the pinion bearing is still good, to take up the slop? I don't figure it is but thought I would ask before ordering the master overhaul kit. Any good literature on rebuilding differentials? Never done anything inside a axle before so any tips are appreciated. BTW this is a monobeam Dana 50 on a 1999 F-350.

If there is that much slop at the yoke chances are that the bearing is hit, It needs to come apart to figure out all what's damaged.

I had a crush sleeve give after a new install (4 wheelin of course) and I tried to just get a new one but the ring and pinion had already wore in a pattern with the slope. So in my case, I had to order a new ring and pinion at the same time. This was my rear axle on my 06 if it makes a difference. Good luck.

I ordered a master install kit which come with Timken bearings/races for the carrier and pinion. Should have all the tools by the end of the week to attempt reassembly.

Was it pretty clear to see that the ring/pinion were damaged? My gears look fine but I have never worked on a differential before to know, aside from the obvious, whats good and whats bad.

I had just paid to have 4.88s installed in my 06. Made it 10k miles and then wheel hopped it off road really bad. Shortly after it Started whining going down the roadand continued to get worse. That was my first sign. So by the time I got it apart to look the pattern was pretty easy to see. I was able to see the original wear marks and then as it got slop in the pinion it basically started to taper the edges of the teeth. I did not fix it myself though so I don't have any info on install for ya. We have a driveline guy at work and I figured it would last longer if he did it. He did mention if I had caught it earlier he could have reused the ring and pinion. I like to take stuff apart. Back together usually not my specialty.

My gears look alright to me and I didn't notice any strange noises coming from the front when in 4WD. I have already spent North of $600 just on tools to do this job so I am going into it about as prepared as I can be. But it is just the front axle so if I screw something up I can still drive my truck. As long as I keep it on the pavement...
