Well there has been a lot of talk around lately about the Dorman bellowed uppipes, how we'll they are made etc...

Well I decided to give them a try and had two 7.3's in the shop in need of manifolds and uppipes. I ordered both manifolds and uppipe sets from rock auto parts looked pretty good. Insta was quite a different story.

First off I checked all part numbers and parts to ensure I had all the right parts and all looked good. I then put both manifolds on and just ran the bolts down until they were seated to fit the uppipes.

I put the uppipes on and ran into the first bit of trouble. Both pipes lacked 1/2" or better from meeting the manifold and the bellows would have to be stretched a good bit to fit which I didn't like real well and thought that kind of sucked.

Second, I went to torque the manifolds to the spec 45 ft-lbs. drivers side went smoothly no problems. Passenger side I started at the rear working my way up. On the last bolt I hear a "pow" noise and think either the threads came loose or a bolt broke. But the manifold actually cracked right beside that bolt. I was kind of aggravated but said oh well I have the second one I can put on and send this one back before I do the other truck. So I put the other one I have on and guess what? THE SAME THING HAPPENED IN THE SAME EXACT SPOT! At this point I'm pissed. Everything I had left was sent back and are having ford parts put back on.

Moral of the story is the price looks great but you get what you pay for and I would suggest nobody buy these things.

Damn, that sucks big time. I ended up going with the Dorman Bellowed uppies about a month ago, great price and the only issue I ran into was the shi**y quality bolts, ended up reusing the stock bolts and no issues as of yet. Didn't have any gaps between the manifolds and the uppipes, I left the uppipes loose from the manifolds, installed the turbo and attached the y pipe to the turbo, then bolted the uppipes to the manifolds and torqued down. I'm still thinking I have a small leak on the drivers side manifold somewhere near the front of the truck, but I'm hoping a re-tourqe will cure that so I dont have to buy new manifolds too.

next time torque starting from the center, and work your way outward,
ex. 5 3 1 2 4

thats the correct way to torque something!!!

I know that but they were already almost at torque spec no way that thing should have cracked at 40 ft-lbs

should have still started from the center. compression of the gasket from torquing from the end, caused the other end of the manifold to lift off the gasket. that caused to much pressure on the last bolt boss, cause excessive pressure on the bolt ear. I'm not saying the manifold wasn't junk. what i am saying is, you broke 2 manifolds doing the exact same torque procedure. that says user error to me!!!

Trust me I understand how torquing procedures work there is very little gasket compression and defnitley not enough it should have broken a manifold. The stock one had no issues doing it the exact same way. If it was going to break that easily I'm glad I did it the way I did and it broke there instead of down the road on the customer!!! (Just figured I'd use some !!! Marks too lol)

I used to trust Dorman explicitly when doing restores on old cars. Something changed in the last few years, I refuse to buy anything that says Dorman on it.

If anybody needs the correct stuff from International I have several kits laying around. I used to be all about finding the cheapest and what not but now the aggravation of having to eff with a new product or modify to make it work is not worth it to me anymore.
