For the first time, my dash lit up and said "Drain water separator". So, I did, and went ahead and changed the filters. This was Friday, 2 days ago. I drove the truck around tonight, just locally, grocery shopping, and met a friend for dinner. And the same light keeps lighting up. I pulled the arm to drain the rail filter, and dropped the filter, and let the top engine mount filter bowl drain as well. New filters in both. And the same light keeps going off..... Did I not do something? What am I forgetting?

This is in the 450. Stock fuel system.

Sounds like a faulty sensor chris, the 6.4's have had issues with faulty sensors tripping the light. Start simple by draining it into a bottle tomorrow and check for water. My guess is either a bad sensor or you got some bad gas, no pun intended lol

drain into a clean, clear bottle and check for sure. Had the same thing happen with my 04 450. After draining water out the 3rd time I drained the tank only to find gallons of water. Not sure if it was from the pump or someone...

Drain it, then pull the cover and actually clean it out. It is incredible what you will find in there.

Yep do this. I had the same problem you are describing and it was amazing the mount of gunk I cleaned outta there. I replaced the sensor too and it fixed it.

Forgot to add.... I am at 94,400 miles on the 2010 450. And she has been all over the country. Bad fuel might just be the issue. But, I will clean out the drain, and check her out before I go crazy. Least evasive maneuver first.... LOL

I drained it again, and ZERO water in diesel fuel..... however, the diesel doesn't pour out smoothly from the spout. Leading me to believe that there might be some buildup like the pics above... I will be driving the same route to work tomorrow, and If the light comes back on, I will be stopping at Ford for a few parts.... gasket and sensor, and clean that biotch out.....

Thanks guys, I'll post what I find.

I did this a while ago but I think ford has a kit for this issue. The drain valve would be separate if it tough to turn i would replace it too. Try to have the tank low on fuel when you change it. It tends to siphon out when it full.

Just a Lil heads up guys, on your 6.4s try to drain the WIF separator at least once a month. These systems only hold 3 teaspoons of actual water, and as y'all know the hpfp doesn't like water either. But like the guys said above, remove the lines, cover and clean out that cavity. Just make sure
The check valve or spring don't fall out when
Removing the cap. Good luck bud.

I have driven 48,000 miles in the last 6 months, so I have not had to drain it, except when I changed the filters! LOL This is the first time that I havent racked up miles on her quick enough to change it.....

And thanks for the tip!
