OK, so I am getting my shopping list together to change all of the fluids on my '97 5spd this weekend... Tranny, T-case, diffs. I am curious what everyone uses, and if there are tricks or problems I should watch out for while performing the service. I have heard to fill the tranny from the shifter all the way to the top to help quiet down the gear roll at idle, any thoughts on that?

Thanks

If your tranny is in good shape (not grinding on downshifts, etc), I would use Castrol TranSynd in the tranny, 4 quarts through the shifter hole. It can be somewhat hard to find (it an Allison-spec synthetic ATF that ZF recommends), so if you can't get it use a sythetic ATF. For the rear end, I use RedLine 75-140 synthetic since I tow with it. I haven't had to do the transfer case and front diff on the 97 yet, so I won't comment there. Cheers!

Not sure which front end u have but using a suction gun makes changing the d50 front end ez

And I used it on the t case. Make sure to buy extra atf. It is recommended in the t case and I was 2 short so I had to mix.

After running full synthetic bumper to bumper I picked up 1 more MPG. Bout 15 city and 19.5 hwy.

I'm biased towards AMSOIL as it surpasses any and all OEM recommendations

which Amsoil fluids? I am spoiled in that my local autoparts store stocks redline, amsoil and the purple stuff... I also have read about the Castrol fluid made for the Allisons being the best? Anyone have a biased opinion on that? Freightliner here in town has it for $45/gallon

I don't know about the Castrol TranSynd being the best, but that's what ZF said to use in the remanufactured tranny that I bought from one of their distributors locally (after the first 1000-2000 miles). Cheers!

I ran 75-140 synthetic and friction modifier in the rear end, not really sure if I needed both. Buy a good flex-i-funnel or pump for the rear end end re-fill, after I got done and dumped all the little amounts that I couldn't get squeezed in together I had almost another full bottle.
