Unfortunately, my preliminary diagnosis of what I thought was a failed flex plate turned out to be the beginning of an engine failure. I still haven't recovered from the news so if I don't make total sense in this post cut me some slack. And yes, funds are limited. I need to quickly put together a budget for our family's CFO...:priest:

I don't want to believe that the current set-up; 22.5 wheels, 4.88 rears with a Truetrac rear and 175/75 injectors towing a 16K fifth wheel had anything to do with the failure.

So how do I start this project? Given work and family schedule and the fact that this truck is our second vehicle, I'm not inclined to think that I can pull this off by myself. I need to get back on the road A.S.A.P.

I suspect a short block is the way to go...

Short block or long block would be the fastest. I'm not sure if ford offers a short block anymore or not. But most aftermarket companies like elite and rudys probably don't have them sitting on the shelf unfortunately so you're limited on availability there. I just did a complete engine build on my 6.4 and I was down right at a month. I did all the work myself besides machining.

Ford dealer quoted a short block this morning at $4500. Crazy.

In another thread about my flex plate I talked about the knocking sound. At this point I'll assume, once again :poke:, that a rod bearing has crapped the bed. If that's the case, I can do just a bottom end build and keep everything else intact. Don't need to take the top end apart and I wouldn't need a new block.

Find a good used engine and go threw the top end. Pm airfish on here he is in DE and sells lots of good long blocks.

I just got a very nice jasper remanned engine in.... its out of a f650 so the best deal would be a short block setup that you would need to add your front and rear cover to, I have an oil pan here for it pm me if youre intersted...

To each their own.....I have never had any issues with the ones I get in here.... worst thing ever was finding a new valve guide after ups rolled it down some stairs while delivering it.

Local guy to me is selling an 03 that ran when it was removed for $1200, it's in central pa. Engine hasn't ran in 3ish years though. Might be able to get him down in price.
