A close friend of mine has a 97 F250 4x4 Powerstroke diesel auto extended cab with 280,000 miles that I help him maintain.
About 4am this morning on the way to work he hit a couple of black cows. Took out the grille and headlights. Bent hood, left fender, and left door. Bumper brackets bent a little but I think bumper is OK. Minor dent behind left door. It is driveable, no fluid loss, frame doesn't appear to be bent.
This truck is well maintained all stock and kept up well. The only thing it needs is the left seat bottom reupholstered. The paint is very good, no dents.
He has full coverage insurance on it with State Farm. The adjuster came out same day, looked at it 15 minutes an pronounced it a total. I expected this to happen, and had advised him not to settle so quickly, to argue the value and the buy back, also not to end up with a salvage title. Waiting to hear insurance co reply. I know you have to stand up to them.

Anyone been through this lately or have any advice?

I have a parts truck (even the same color) and I think we can have it driveable in a day or two.

My brother had his 1999 Acura Integra stolen two months ago and it was recovered with the plastic fascia over the front end gone along with the headlight assemblies. Fortunately the bumper assembly was still there. Insurance totaled it with a value around $4000+ so he bought it back and still got a $3000+ check out of it.

In my experience, this seems a little high, though. I thought buyback was about 1/3 of the "total" value.

Insurance people should be able to advise you about the "salvage title".

I went through this when my truck was stolen. The insurance company wanted to total it. There was nothing wrong mechanically, just the POS thieving bastards poured on every body panel.

I had the insurance company cut me a check 80% (or whatever your insurance consistered totaled) of the total value. By getting check of 80%, you don't have to deal with a salvage/rebuilt title and the associated BS with the DMV.
