Cheap insurance they are pennies compared to the rest of the build. You should be able to pick a whole set up for like $30. Besides you can try and get some of the junk out of the block
I seem to recall Machinist posting information to leave them alone on a rebuild as the original ones are better then the typical replacement ones. Not sure where I read that though.
Yeah it's best not to mess with them if there not rusting out or leaking. I have only ever seen one freeze plug leak before on a powerstroke and it was on a brand new 6.0 engine.
