I have a 08, 120k, puked coolant towing camper, I lifted cab, tore engine down, sent heads out, they were machined, did a valve job, replaced 3 valves, all new springs , seals etc, pressure test was good, installed arp studs, new Ford head gaskets, new oil cooler, some of the rockers (feet) looked wore, couple were pretty bad, I replaced all rockers , pushrods, and lifters, new hp fuel lines in heads and going to heads, replaced front cover and crank seal, anyways fired it up to test once cab was back on and heard a popping from intake, it only ran for 30-60 sec approx, did this twice, second time I cranked it the starter seemed to want to keep going, shut key off and tries again and it started, bit still popping, should I proceed or tear back down, is any of this related to oil pressure that may need to be built in lifters pushrods ect, new bridges were installed also, I'm at a loss

Sounds like you didnt get a push rod fully seated in either the lifter or the socket on the rocker.

Definitely an exhaust valve isn't opening. Likely as 6.0 tech said a push rod isn't in the lifter or the rocker. If you pull the intake elbow off and start the truck the pop will be louder and then if you carefully slide your hand in the intake and use it like a divider. As you block off the right and then left side you will be able to determine which side you have to tear apart. So if you block the right side off and the popping gets muffled. Then that side is your culprit.

It should have a contribution code, but yes sounds like you had a pushrod on a lifter lip and baboom.

Is there anyway that lifters and pushrods just need time to prime and fill up with oil, lifters were soaked in oil for 20+ hours, pushrods were filled and assembly lube placed on all points of contact? Just trying to think positive

Really, what about Ford's fancy sequence of 3 or 8 on intake lift determines 1 or 4 firing order then tighten 1278 or 3456
