Front Axle Shaft Play?

00' with the 229 Dana 50. What is the normal/accepted amount of slop/play in the axle shafts when prying them up and down (gently) on the joint from the knuckle/ball joint?

I have a vibration/rattle that intermittently comes and goes and certain speeds with the hubs locked (in 4wd or not) that I'm trying to resolve.

Not much. You may be able to feel a bit, but if you can visually see movement most likely the spindle bearing/ stub axle is worn. You may also hear a rattle on bumps in extreme cases.

The centering yoke on the driveshaft is also a common source of noise and vibration. Try moving that to see if there is any slop, you may have to rotate it into different positions to get movement.
